Flyers Trade Ryan Parent to Nashville for Rights to Dan Hamhuis

The Flyers traded the oft injured and oft disappointing Ryan Parent today to the Nashville Predators today for defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent in less than two weeks. If the Flyers can't sign Hamuis to a new contract before July 1st, the Predators will reportedly ship an additional seventh round pick.

Ironically, Parent was once the first round pick of the Predators and was sent to the Flyers in exchange for Peter Forsberg.

Hamhuis was rumored to be a target of the Flyers last season leading up to the NHL trade deadline, but that deal never materialized. Obviously though, the organization did covet the player. Hamhuis represents a steady and dependable presence who will immediately upgrade the Flyers' blue line which now boasts Dan Hamhuis, Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Kimmo Timmonen, & Braydon Coburn.

Here's a scouting report on Hamhuis.

Assets
  • Can play a sound defensive game, log big minutes and also be used in a shutdown role. Moves the puck well out of the defensive zone. Has loads of hockey sense.
Flaws
  • Isn't a physical defenseman, which somewhat limits his effectiveness against big NHL forwards. Is also a limited contributor in the offensive zone.
Career Potential
  • Big-minute defenseman.

On it's face it appears the Flyers fleeced the Preds in this deal, but you have to remember that Hamhuis was headed to unrestricted free agency and Nashville was going to lose him anyway. So they really got something for nothing here. A guy with less than two weeks left on his contract isn't worth much.

The Flyers get the exclusive rights to negotiate with Hamhuis until July 1st. If they don't get a deal done by then, he can go where he pleases.
