Michael Vick led the Eagles on three scoring drives in the second half after Kevin Kolb was knocked out of the game with a concussion.
In addition to signing fullback Owen Schmitt on Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced several other minor but nevertheless noteworthy transactions. From a recent tweet by EaglesInsider:
Andy Reid: Eagles will sign FB Owen Schmidt and promote TE Garrett Mills. OL Fence Tupou will be signed to practice squad.
Check in at Bleeding Green Nation for more analysis and discussion about the transactions, as well as Sunday’s disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Leonard Weaver discusses his season ending injury with CSNPhilly.
One of the bright spots Sunday was the play of rookie safety Nate Allen, who notched his first NFL interception in just his first NFL game.
In doing so, he became the Eagles first rookie to register an interception in his first game since the great Eric Allen did it against Tampa Bay in 1988.
Now If Nate Allen goes on to have a career like Eric Allen… then we’re in good shape.
Both Kevin Kolb & Stewart Bradley took nasty hits to the head against the Packers Sunday and both were slow to get up. At the half, we learned that both had sustained concussions. However, both were allowed to return to the game after their hits and before halftime. After the game, Andy Reid was pressed as to why.
On the decision to have QB Kevin Kolb and MLB Stewart Bradley return to the game after originally suffering injuries:
“They were fine. All of the questions that they answered with the doctors registered well, but as it went on, they weren’t feeling well, so we took them out.”
On whether either Kolb or Bradley got hit again after returning to the game:
“No.”
On how he will proceed with treating the concussions suffered by Kolb and Bradley:
“I am going to meet with the doctors and we’ll see how it all works out here – how they test out.”
On whether he had concerns about reinserting Bradley back in the game after he stumbled off the field originally:
“I know our doctors and [Head Athletic Trainer] Rick [Burkholder] were on top of it. They thought he tested out okay on the sideline.”
The Philadelphia Eagles 2010 season got off to a disastrous start in a game that saw five starters go down with injury. At least two of which will be done for the season.
Leonard Weaver tore his ACL on a horrific play where his leg literally bent the wrong direction. He’s done for the season as is center Jamaal Jackson who suffered torn biceps. Stewart Bradley and Kevin Kolb both missed the second half with concussions and before they are cleared to play again they will need to pass tests administered by both the team and an independent physician. Their status for next week is unknown.
The offense got off to an absolutely dreadful start. Kevin Kolb did not look sharp, the offense line was giving up tons of pressure, the running game couldn’t get moving, and Michael Vick was seemingly in the game every other play. By the end of the half, they had as many penalty yards as they did yards of net offense. Kolb finished the day just 5 of 10 for 24 yards. He was sacked twice, suffering his concussion on the second of those. He was actually re-inserted into the game after that hit and threw three incomplete passes.
The defense got off to a hot start, but really struggled at the end of the first half and start of the second. They gave up all 27 of the Packers points in the 2nd & 3rd quarter. They did picked off Aaron Rodgers twice and got three sacks in the game, but 27 points just isn’t good enough.
The Eagles did make a game of it behind none other than Michael Vick. Vick took over to start the second half and immediately starting moving the offense. Vick engineered three scoring drives including TDs. His comeback fell short as the Eagles were unable to convert a 4th and 1 with 2 minutes to go and down by just 7 points. Vick finished the day with 175 yards passing and 103 rushing.

Andy Reid announced that center Jamaal Jackson, who had battled back from offseason knee injury, suffered a torn bicept and will likely be done for the year.
Leonard Weaver is also likely finished for the season after his injury. Looks like Howie Roseman will have some work to do to fill out the roster after this game.
It’s going from bad to worse for the Eagles in a nightmare of a season opener. Jason Peters is the latest Eagle to go down with what the team is calling a right knee sprain. His return is questionable.
His injury was part of a double wammy on a play where LeSean McCoy scored, only to have it called back thanks to a holding penalty.
After Kevin Kolb was taken out of the game with a concussion, Michael Vick started the second half at QB. His first drive was promising, but shortened by an Eldra Buckley fumble. His second drive ended with 7 points on the board.
Vick led the Eagles on a 9 play, 60 yard drive which featured a 31 yard scramble to give the Eagles first and goal. LeSean McCoy would punch it in from 12 yards out after a holding penalty negated another TD run from him two plays earlier.
Kevin Kolb & Stewart Bradley did not return to the field with the Eagles as the team came out for the second half. Both players sustained big blows to the head that had them very slow to get off the field, but both players were re-inserted into the game.
Kolb was hurt after being sacked and driven into the ground by Packers’ LB Clay Matthews. Both Brent Celek & Winston Justice seemed to whiff on blocks on that play. Kolb was seen favoring his jaw and was getting memory tests on the sidelines after the play.
Stewart Bradley’s injury seemed serious at first. His head was hit hard on Ernie Sims’ hip. Bradley tried to get up, stumbled a few steps and fell to the ground. He looked dazed as Eagles trainers looked at him. Amazingly, he was put back in the game two plays later.
Center Jamaal Jackson is the latest Eagle to go down. Jackson, who is playing his first game back since tearing his ACL at the end of last year, left the game in the second quarter with an elbow injury.
The Eagles announced that he will not return.
Leonard Weaver was helped off the field in the second quarter of the Eagles season opener in obvious pain with what looked like a very ugly knee injury.
Weaver ran for a about a yard and his knee was literally bent the wrong direction as he sandwiched between two Packers players. Weaver was in tears as he was helped off the field…
It was one of the more disturbing injuries I’ve seen in a while. I can’t see any that it’s not a serious injury.
The Eagles have announced their inactives for today’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Jamar Chaney, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, Keenan Clayton, Max Jean-Gilles, Austin Howard, Reggie Wells & Darryl Tapp,
You could make the argument that a young QB has never been more prepared to take their reigns as the starter than Kevin Kolb has to this point. Drafted at the top of the second round of the 2007 draft. Since that time, he’s spent three seasons on the bench watching the best QB in Eagles history, Donovan McNabb. He’s also been under the tutelage of Andy Reid & Mornhinweg, who have collectively coached McNabb, Brett Favre, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia (both here and in San Francisco), & Matt Hasselbeck.
Kolb takes over an Eagles offense with arguably the best set of weapons in the Andy Reid era. DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, & Brent Celek are light years beyond the days when the likes of James Thrash, Todd Pinkston, & L.J. Smith were starters for this team.
There’s certainly some questions on the offensive line, but for the most part there’s literally nothing more the Eagles could have done to prepare Kevin Kolb. He has the weapons, the training, & the time to learn. It’s all up to him now, and his first test is today against the Packers. This certainly won’t be the game that defines his career, but it is a chance to lay down a statement of intent. It’s a game that will have a national audience, he’s facing one of the best QBs in football, and he could really show the NFL that he’s arrived.
More importantly though, Kolb has the chance to repay the faith and the effort that the Eagles organization has put into him.

Game information, five things to watch and staff views
They say bench LeSean McCoy on your fantasy team and predict a 35-21 Packers victory.
The Eagles host the Packers tomorrow in week one of the NFL season and to learn a little more about the Pack, we traded questions this week with Packers blog "Ol' Bag of Donuts." You can check out my answers to their questions over there.
The Packers secondary is beat up to say the least. What's your level of concern with that in the early part of the season?
To be honest, it is definitely one of the weak points of the team heading into the season. There isn't much concern about the starting four of Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams at CB and Nick Collins and rookie Morgan Burnett at safety, but it is the depth that worries us. With Al Harris on the PUP list to start the season, you are looking at the likes Brandon Underwood, Sam Shields and Jarret Bush in your nickel and dime packages. Not all that comforting. Even with former starting safety Atari Bigby also on the PUP list, the rookie Burnett has actually been a pleasant surpise as a third-round pick, as he probably already had the job won before Bigby had surgery. So what is my level of concern? No concern at all with the starting unit, but it gets raised a lot when the Packers are forced into nickel and dime sets.
Everyone loves Aaron Rodgers, everyone loves the Packers offense this year... but are there any chinks in the armor? What might stop them from being the best offense in the NFC?
To make it simple the offensive line. Everyone knows that Rodgers got beat up last year, but it actually improved a lot in the second half of the season after their bye week. Everyone is healthy right now, which wasn't the case last year, and first round pick tackle Bryan Bulaga has been as good as advertised. While, he is not in the starting lineup yet, he will make an impact sooner than later. Rodgers has been criticized before for holding the ball too long, but I think that is the result of a poor offensive line. If they can play like they did down the stretch last year, this offense can be very scary.
If you could steal an Eagle and add him to Packers, who would it be?
Even though Packers return game is dismal right now and as much as I want to say DeSean Jackson I have to go defense with Trent Cole. Clay Matthews is a great pass rusher, but he is about all the Packers have right now until someone steps up therefore Cole would fill a big void. Dom Capers would line him up at OLB in the 3-4, but he has the size to play DE in certain formations. The secondary depth is a little weak right now, but adding a pass rusher like Cole would help those problems. Matthews and Cole on the edges? Watch out!
The NFC North looks like it will be pretty good this year. The Packers and Vikings are 2009 playoff teams, the Bears went on a spending spree in the offseason, and the Lions are showing signs that they might finally be improving. Since the Eagles play the NFC North this year, would mind sizing it up a bit for us? Who is a real contender and who is a pretender?
Not to be a homer, but the Packers are the team to beat. The Vikings should be a playoff team again, but will only go as far as Favre takes him, if he can stay healthy. If he can't, this season won't be pretty in Minnesota. The Vikings are also lacking offensive weapons with Sidney Rice out 8 weeks and Percy Harvin basically game-to-game at this point with his migraine issues. The Bears are all smoke with the word is that Cutler is still having some discipline issues with the Martz system. Julius Peppers doesn't help their aging defense that much since he only plays hard a 1/3 of the time and just got paid. I actually think the Lions are the one team that can sneak up on some teams this year. They have their holes, but Jim Schwartz (sp) is starting build a solid foundation. Their defensive line will be greatly improved with the additions of Kyle VandenBosch, Ndamonkung Suh and Corey Williams and not many teams want to worry how to cover Best and Megatron on the otherside of the ball. There has also been a lot of positive talk about Stafford so far, so as weird as it sounds don't sleep on the Motor City Kitties.

Previously, Andy Reid announced that DeSean Jackson & Ellis Hobbs would be the starting punt and kickoff return men respectively. Today, he hinted that the arrival of rookie Jorrick Calvin may have changed that. Here's an excerpt from his press conference today.
On whether WR DeSean Jackson and CB Ellis Hobbs will be used as returners in the upcoming game:
"I'm debating on that right now, but we'll see how it goes here."
On what is factoring into the decision as to whether or not Jackson and Hobbs will return:
"Well, I've got [CB Jorrick] Calvin. I've got Calvin here, so I've brought him in to kind of do that, help out there, so we'll just see."
On whether Calvin may be used on both kick returns and punt returns:
"Yeah, he does both."
Calvin was a productive return man in college, albeit not quite as productive as DeSean Jackson was... Here's an excerpt from his scouting report focusing on his special teams work.
Took over as the Trojans' primary kick and punt returner from record-setting All-American Leodis McKelvin, taking one kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown against North Texas … Returned a blocked field goal 65 yards for a score against ULL … Finished the season ranked 30th in the nation, and first in the Sun Belt, in kick returns, averaging 25.7 yards per return, or 2.5 yards more per return than McKelvin had as a senior to earn All-America honors …
The Eagles offensive line, which struggled mightily in preseason, is finally healthy enough for all the regular starters to play. That was never the case in preseason. The question now becomes are they healthy enough to be effective?
Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg talked about getting the line up to speed.
"Well, I think that's the key. They've played a lot of winning snaps together and now they're standing, so we'll keep a close eye on that. Other than that, they're very good in their preparation and they're putting their hard work in with their recent past history and then this week. I would expect them to play at a high level."
He was also asked if there was a chance that Mike McGlynn could be asked to spell Jamaal Jackson for a series if needed. Jackson will be playing in his first game since tearing his ACL in the second to last game of the 2009 season. He didn't play in the preseason and only returned to practice a few weeks ago.
"We'll see what happens with [C] Jamaal [Jackson]. I do believe that Jamaal is in excellent physical condition. Maybe the best that he's been in, however, there are different kinds of physical condition in football. Our strength men, coaches and our trainers have just done an outstanding job with all of our players, including Jamaal."
The Eagles still have full participation in practice, whereas the Packers have a few injuries of note.
Brady Poppinga, Mike Neal, Brandon Underwood & Desmond Bishop all did not practice on Thursday.
Kevin Kolb & Aaron Rodgers both arrived at their starting jobs in similar ways. They took over for long time franchise QBs after spending three years on the bench watching. This week, both were asked what they thought of each and how they handled their transition… Turns out, there’s parallels in the way these guys talk too.
Kevin Kolb
“The big thing I pull from him is how he handled everything. The whole picture, that’s with [QB] Brett [Favre] leaving, similar to me with Donovan, also, in my opinion, it’s taking over a good team, it’s not like young guys who come in and they’re doing a rebuilding thing, we both had good teams coming in to, so success is demanded right off the bat, and it’s no different here.”
Aaron Rodgers
“I’ve been a big fan of his because of the way he’s handled himself,” Rodgers said. "He’s done a nice job. It’s never an easy situation but I think he’s a very talented guy, big strong arm, athletic and I’m excited for his opportunity. I know the kind of feelings he’s got to be feeling this week.
“Although he’s started two games, this is his first chance as the guy.”
Ok, so they agree. They like the way they handle themselves…
We explored more about the parallels and connections between Rodgers and Kolb over at Bleeding Green Nation.
