The 2011 Philadelphia Marathon begins tomorrow, the event has unofficially kicked off today with the running of the Rothman Institute 8k. The 8k was launched in 2005 to accommodate those amateurs interested in being a part of race weekend, but weren't at the level needed to run the 13.1 half or the 26.2 mile full marathons on Sunday.

The Rothman Institute 8K is a near 5 mile course that starts on the Ben Franklin Parkway, near the art museum and runs along the Schuylkill River. Several runners will compete in the 8k on Saturday as a warmup for the full marathon on Sunday. More than 3,000 runners will participate.

The full and the half marathons are scheduled to begin tomorrow at 7 a.m. ET. The annual race will begin at 22nd Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, PA.

The Philadelphia Marathon was first run in 1954 and serves as a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, one of the world's five major marathons. Produced and hosted by the city of Philadelphia, the events of the marathon weekend are expected to draw 25,000 participants.

For those searching for detailed information, the Philadelphia marathon's official site is a bevy of great information for participants and casual viewers alike.
