Week 11 NFL Power Rankings: Injuries Could Shift Balance Of Power

Week 10 was an absolute bloodbath in the NFL and will probably have pretty major ramifications on the power rankings for the remainder of the season. The amount of major injuries sustained this week has to be greater than we've seen all year, if not in a couple years. However, no one had it worse than the Texans, who appear to have lost Matt Schaub for the season with Lisfranc injury. That's a killer blow to a team that was legitimately playing some of the best football of the season.

Other notables to go down were Chiefs QB Matt Cassell who could go on IR with a hand injury and the Eagles' Michael Vick who may miss next week with cracked ribs. Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno is done for the year with an ACL tear and Bears LG Chris Williams was put on IR after dislocating his wrist and undergoing surgery on Sunday.

But it wasn't all bad news as we have some quick risers this week. The Chicago Bears have everyone believing after back to back road wins in Philly and Detroit. The Patriots are back from the dead with a blowout win over the Jets and the blowout at the hands of the Eagles may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to the Dallas Cowboys.

With that, onto the week 11 power ranks.

1) Green Bay Packers - It's getting silly at this point. The Pack are dominating people. LW (1)

2) San Francisco 49ers - At this point, it would be a surprise if the Niners don't get a bye in the playoffs. (LW 3)

3) Houston Texans - This is really a shame. The Texans have been playing as good as anyone in this league over the last month and now it appears that they've lost Matt Schaub for the year. Who knows maybe Matt Leinart can keep...bwahahaha! (LW 6)

4) New Orleans Saints - Mike Smith deserves at least some of the credit for this Saints win. Great call there Mike. (LW 5)

5) Chicago Bears - The Bears have a very favorable schedule from here on. They have to be considered as favorites for the first wildcard. (LW 13)

6) New England Patriots - Just when we were about to write off the Pats, they go ahead and dominate the Jets in their own building. LW (14)

7) New York Giants - The Giants might have beaten the Niners if that game was in New York. It wasn't though. (LW 4)

8) Pittsburgh Steelers - In a bad week for the AFC North, the Steelers come out on top. (LW 8)

9) Baltimore Ravens - If you look up "let down game" in the football encyclopaedia, you'll find the Ravens vs the Seahawks. (LW 2)

10) New York Jets - That was a good old fashioned humbling defeat at the hands of the Patriots. (LW 7)

11) Dallas Cowboys - Getting embarrassed by the Eagles on national TV seems to have woken these Cowboys up. (LW 17)

12) Cincinnati Bengals - They might not be ready to hang with the big dogs yet, but they're not far off. (LW 9)

13) Detroit Lions - Another chance to prove themselves against an NFC contender, another failure. (LW 10)

14) Buffalo Bills - Since signing that big new contract, Ryan Fitzpatrick is 0-2 and has thrown five picks.  (LW 11)

15) Tennessee Titans - The Titans are suddenly in pretty good shape in the AFC South. They're only a game back of the Texans, who have now lost Matt Schaub for the year. (LW 20)

16) Atlanta Falcons - Going for it on 4th down on your own 30 is dubious at any point in a game, doubly so in overtime. (LW 12)

17) Oakland Raiders - Carson Palmer looks more like his old self and suddenly the AFC West is theirs for the taking. (LW 21)

18) Kansas City Chiefs - This year KC has gone from the worst team in the league, to division leaders, back to one of the worst teams again.  (LW 15)

19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Tampa has lost three straight and is fading fast in the NFC playoff picture. (LW 16)

20) Arizona Cardinals - They've got a full blown QB controversy in Arizona as John Skelton has outplayed Kevin Kolb in the two games he's started. (LW 31)
21) San Diego Chargers - Gave up 489 total yards to the Raiders on Thursday night. (LW 19)

22) Miami Dolphins - The Dolphins are really playing well lately. Problem is, one more win puts them in a pack with a bunch of three wins teams, which means no sure shot at a franchise QB. (LW 28)

23) Philadelphia Eagles - How many wins does Andy Reid need to survive for next year? 7 or 8? That looks like a long shot at this point.  (LW 18)

24) Denver Broncos - Tim Tebow completed two of eight passes and Denver still won. You can't say the guy isn't interesting.  (LW 22)

25) Jacksonville Jaguars - The weekly winner of the "have the Colts on your schedule" sweepstakes. (LW 26)

26) Cleveland Browns - If Cleveland is in a position to draft Landry Jones or Matt Barkley, do they do it? (LW 23)

27) St. Louis Rams - Hopefully you didn't have to watch their win over the Browns. (LW 29)

28) Seattle Seahawks - Seattle is just a tough place to play. Just ask the Saints or the Ravens. Records don't matter up there. (LW 30)

29) Washington Redskins - Rex Grossman "earns" his starting job back with a 0 TD, 2 INT performance in which the Skins don't manage a TD. (LW 24)

30) Minnesota Vikings - Their blowout at the hands of the Packers would be worse if it wasn't entirely predictable. (LW 25)

31) Carolina Panthers - As good as Cam Newton has been, this team really isn't anywhere near ready to contend. (LW 27)

32) Indianapolis Colts - Bill Polian says he'll consider taking a QB if they get the #1 pick. My question is "If?" (LW 32)

Week 10 NFL Power Rankings: A Patriots Free Top Ten

We have some big movers in the NFL power rankings this week both up and down. The Houston Texans have been one of the best teams in the NFL over the last three weeks and their big jump in the ranks reflects that. The Jets have also won three straight and have earned themselves a slot in the top 10.

As for the big losers this week, Pittsburgh took a tumble after their loss to the Ravens, but it's more of a reflection on the performance of the other teams around them than anything else. That was an absolute war with the Ravens on Sunday night and might have been proof that those two are the best in the AFC.

And finally, our dear friends in Foxboro. The Patriots were as high as #1 in week three of this season, but this time around they find themselves around the middle of the pack after two straight poor performances. As good as Tom Brady is, it's going to be hard to compete when he's got the worst defense in the NFL on the field when he's not.

With that, onto the week 10 power ranks.

1) Green Bay Packers - The Pack are the only undefeated team in the NFL, but if you're wondering if they have a weakness, look no further than that defense, which is giving up the 3rd most yards per game in the NFL. They won't stay undefeated if that ranking holds. LW (1)

2) Baltimore Ravens - Best win of the week (sorry Giants). A true statement game if there ever was one. That said, giving the coach a Gatorade bath afterward? That was a little lame. (LW 4)

3) San Francisco 49ers - Didn't look great on the road against the Redskins, but whenever a West Coast team travels east and gets a win, they should be happy. Should be a great game when they welcome the Giants to SF next week. (LW 3)

4) New York Giants - The Giants defense has manged to make Matt Moore look good and Tom Brady look bad in back to back weeks. Go figure. (LW 6)

5) New Orleans Saints - Convincing win over the Bucs to keep themselves atop the NFC South. (LW 9)

6) Houston Texans - Over the last three weeks, the Texans have scored 95 points and allowed just 33. They're quietly playing some of the best football in the league. (LW 11)

7) New York Jets - At this point, the Jets have to be considered the favorites in the AFC East. (LW 12)

8) Pittsburgh Steelers - Tough for them to swept by the Ravens, but they showed that they're not going anywhere. (LW 2)

9) Cincinnati Bengals - Cincy is currently second in the AFC North, but they've yet to play the Ravens or Steelers. That changes the next two weeks. Let's see how Andy Dalton looks after those two games. (LW 10)

10) Detroit Lions - Had a bye to heal up and get ready for a massive game against the Bears this weekend. (LW 5)

11) Buffalo Bills - The Bills had a chance to make a statement at home against the Jets. They did make a statement... but the statement was "We're not ready to contend in the AFC East."  (LW 7)

12) Atlanta Falcons - Won their gimme game against the Colts last week, but on Sunday s@*t gets real when they host the Saints at the Georgia Dome.  (LW 13)

13) Chicago Bears - Two uncharacteristic fumbles from Matt Forte led to 14 points for the Eagles, but otherwise the Bears played really well on the road in Philadelphia. They have a chance to stake a real claim to a playoff spot next week against Detroit. (LW 15)

14) New England Patriots - Their defense has stunk all year, but their offense has now stunk for two straight games. All is not well in Foxboro. LW (8)

15) Kansas City Chiefs - Does anyone want to win the AFC West? Anyone?  (LW 14)

16) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - They've lost two straight and now have to face the red hot Texans and undefeated Packers in the next weeks. This season could slip away fast for the Bucs. (LW 16)

17) Dallas Cowboys - The Cowboys are great at beating bad teams. (LW 20)

18) Philadelphia Eagles - So it appears the Eagles we saw the last two weeks were the anomaly and the sloppy team with the bad defense we saw over the first five weeks is the reality. (LW 17)

19) San Diego Chargers - Phillip Rivers now has six INTs over his last two games. He's just not right. (LW 18)

20) Tennessee Titans - The Titans are on the road for 3 of their next 4. They need to win three of those four to remain in the playoff hunt. (LW 19)

21) Oakland Raiders - Carson Palmer has only played 1.5 games this year and already has the 7th highest INT total in the NFL. That's looking like one of the worst trades ever made. (LW 21)

22) Denver Broncos - Tim Tebow wasn't terrible, so let's all overreact the other way! Still hasn't managed to complete half of his passes, but hey... they're only a game back in the awful AFC West.  (LW 28)

23) Cleveland Browns - The Browns have some winnable games over the next couple weeks, but then they still have to face the Steelers and Ravens each twice. (LW 22)

24) Washington Redskins - If the Colts are leading the Luck sweepstakes, is this weekend's game against the Dolphins the Landry Jones bowl? (LW 23)

25) Minnesota Vikings - Got a week of rest, which is good... because they're in Lambeau on Sunday. (LW 24)

26) Jacksonville Jaguars - Can we just flex this Colts vs Jags game this weekend off the schedule altogether? (LW 25)

27) Carolina Panthers - They've got their QB of the future, so now all that remains is for the Panthers to start winning some games. (LW 26)

28) Miami Dolphins - They're just too competitive to suck for Luck. Matt Moore probably isn't the future, but he's playing well. (LW 31)

29) St. Louis Rams - See the Panthers blurb. (LW 27)

30) Seattle Seahawks - How on earth did this team go into New Jersey and whip the Giants in week 5? (LW 29)

31) Arizona Cardinals - People seem to think the rookie of the year race is between Andy Dalton and Cam Newton. Maybe Patrick Peterson deserves some mention as well. (LW 30)

32) Indianapolis Colts - Peyton Manning made an appearance on the sidelines on Sunday. Didn't help. (LW 32)

Week 9 NFL Power Rankings: Is The AFC North The Best Division In Football?

Back in week six of the NFL season, we titled our power rankings post "Bow To Our NFC North Overlords." This week, maybe we should scratch out NFC and replace it with AFC, because that division is probably the best in football. The Steelers, Ravens and Bengals (yes, the Bengals) all have just two losses and the Browns actually have the best record of any last place team in the league. This is a strong division and the best part of it is, they really haven't started to play one another yet. The Ravens still have Cincy & Cleveland twice, plus they get the Steelers next weekend. The Steelers also still haven't played the Bengals. So not only should we learn a lot about just how good these teams are over this second half, we'll probably be seeing some good football in doing so.

The AFC North isn't the only division that's tight right now. All four NFC East teams are within 2 games of the lead, the NFC South has three teams with three losses, and any one of three teams could be leading the AFC East after next week. There's more parity than ever this year in the NFL. It's mostly thanks to mediocrity and inconsistency... but hey, chances are your team isn't out of it.

With that, let's get on with the week 9 NFL power rankings.

1) Green Bay Packers - They finally failed to get a win, but that's only because they were on a bye. Fantasy players everywhere lament. LW (1)

2) Pittsburgh Steelers -The Steelers have won four straight and lead the AFC North. Now they get a shot to make up for that opening weekend blowout at the hands of the Ravens. (LW 5)

3) San Francisco 49ers - They've been a better team than the Lions so far, but still aren't getting respect as the "turn it around" team of the season so far. (LW 4)

4) Baltimore Ravens - Is it a good sign that they needed a huge comeback to beat the Cardinals at home? I dunno.. But I doubt they can do that if they fall down by 21 to Pittsburgh this week. (LW 7)

5) Detroit Lions - They crushed the hapless Broncos, but it's still worrying that they lost two straight at home to NFC contenders in the previous two weeks. The Lions were in need of any win last week, now they need a quality win after their bye  (LW 8)

6) New York Giants - Not the most impressive win over a winless team at home... but it was a win and the Giants are 5-2. Their schedule is brutal from here on out however. (LW 6)

7) Buffalo Bills - Great shutout win over the Redskins ties them atop the AFC East. This game against the Jets should be one of the best of this week.  (LW 12)

8) New England Patriots - We've known all year that the Pats defense isn't anything special, but to see their offense struggle like they did is a concern. They've got a tough schedule ahead. LW (2)

9) New Orleans Saints - The Saints thought the scheduling Gods did them a huge favor by giving them back to back winless teams on their schedule... But the scheduling Gods are vengeful. (LW 3)

10) Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals are 5-2 and have won four straight. If you don't think they deserve to be this high, you just aren't paying attention. (LW 15)

11) Houston Texans - They've won two straight and could be getting some major help back this week If Andre Johnson can play. (LW 16)

12) New York Jets - The Jets have a tough game this week at the Bills, but a win could put them on top of the AFC East. (LW 10)

13) Atlanta Falcons - The bye week must have felt like a win for them as the Saints choke job in St Louis means they're tied in the loss column for the NFC South lead. And they get the Colts next!  (LW 11)

14) Kansas City Chiefs - It was a sloppy, turnover filled mess they played Monday night against the Chargers... But it was their fourth straight win and puts them in a three way tie atop the AFC West.  (LW 20)

15) Chicago Bears - They will be well rested as they head into Philly for a Monday Night game against the resurgent Eagles. A loss in that game probably buries any hopes they'd have in the NFC North. (LW 13)

16) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Just like the Falcons, the week off felt like a win with the Saints loss. They're now tied in the loss column atop the NFC South. (LW 14)

17) Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles defense was giving up 26 points per game over the first five weeks. Over the last two games, they've given up 20 total points. It may have taken a month, but it appears the Eagles we expected to see have arrived. (LW 19)

18) San Diego Chargers - Phillip Rivers turned the ball over three times, including an inexplicable fumble of the snap as the Chargers were well within range of a game winning FG with less than a minute left. He's just having an awful season. (LW 9)

19) Tennessee Titans - The Titans have done a good job staying alive in the AFC South, but their schedule gets very tough from here on out. With no Kenny Britt and basically no Chris Johnson, it's hard to see how they're going to come out of the next six games above .500. (LW 21)

20) Dallas Cowboys - Going into Sunday night's game, Dallas had the best run defense in the NFL. Apparently someone forgot to tell LeSean McCoy. (LW 17)

21) Oakland Raiders - Carson Palmer's debut two weeks ago and Tim Tebow last week may have been the two worst QB performances we've seen all season... And now they get to face each other this week! (LW 18)

22) Cleveland Browns - The Browns haven't been terrible this year, but they've unfortunately found themselves in arguably the best division in football. (LW 23)

23) Washington Redskins - It doesn't get worse than being shut out. The Redskins strong start is long gone as this team has lost three straight with a pretty tough second half ahead. (LW 22)

24) Minnesota Vikings - Christian Ponder bested his fellow first round pick Cam Newton, although if Cam had Adrian Peterson he'd probably have won too. (LW 29)

25) Jacksonville Jaguars - For all the press Tim Tebow gets for his struggles, rookie Blaine Gabbert isn't much better. He's completing less than 50% of his passes while seeing his class of 2011 counterparts like Cam Newton and Andy Dalton have great rookie seasons (Christian Ponder is playing better than Gabbert too). (LW 24)

26) Carolina Panthers - The Panthers got 99 problems but a QB ain't one. Hit me! (Seriously though, they've got like ninety-nine problems) (LW 26)

27) St. Louis Rams - A.J. Feeley now has as many wins as a starter this season as Kevin Kolb and Donovan McNabb. #ExEaglesQBs (LW 31)

28) Denver Broncos - Tim Tebow wasn't as bad as I expected him to be on Sunday. He was worse. (LW 25)

29) Seattle Seahawks - They're 2-5 and in sole possession of second place in the NFC West, which should tell you something about that division. At least San Fran is making sure we won't see another 8-8 playoff team from them. (LW 28)

30) Arizona Cardinals - Kevin Kolb has been pretty poor this season, but he is getting sacked more times per game than any other QB in the league. (LW 27)

31) Miami Dolphins - They gave the Giants all they could handle in a game everyone picked to be a laugher. Plus, they still lost, so they're still right there in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. (LW 30)
32) Indianapolis Colts - I thought the music in that Calvin Johnson Acura commercial was Bach's Cello Suite no. 1 in G Major, but it turns out that it's an original piece made for the spot. Although it obviously borrows from the Bach piece. (LW 32)

*The Colts are so bad that I've decided to talk about things more interesting than them, rather than trying to find new ways to describe their awfulness.

NFL Power Rankings Week 8: They Are Who We Thought They Were

There's been some serious normalizing over the last couple weeks in the NFL. All those preseason contender teams that got off to bad starts have started winning. Atlanta and the Jets have each won two straight and played themselves back into contention. The Chiefs are back at .500 and the Texans are showing signs of life... Meanwhile, so many of those teams that surprised us with their start are beginning to come back to earth. The Lions have now dropped two straight at home and there's legitimate questions to be asked about them. The Raiders were blown out this week and Carson Palmer might have had the worst week of any QB in the NFL, rivaled only by Oakland's other QB Kyle Boller.

The week ahead is a big one for the latter teams. I think most of us expected teams like Philly, Atlanta and New York to finally figure things out because we're used to see them winning. We're not used to seeing Detroit and Okland rack up victories and therefore people could be quick to write them off when they falter.

Here are your week 8 NFL power rankings.

1) Green Bay Packers - They're humming along at 7-0 heading into their bye. That means I need to alter my fantasy football strategy of just starting any random guy on the Packers offense.. LW (1)

2) New England Patriots - They travel to Pittsburgh this week for what should make for the most intriguing matchup of this Sunday. LW (2)

3) New Orleans Saints - It may have been against the worst team in the league, but anytime you put up 60+ on a team, that's impressive. (LW 8)

4) San Francisco 49ers Held their place in the ranks during the bye as several of the other top teams around them lost. (LW 4)

5) Pittsburgh Steelers - They face Baltimore, New England and Cincy in the next three weeks. We'll know a lot about this team at the end of that stretch. (LW 9)

6) New York Giants - Had a bye last week and now get the Dolphins at home before starting a brutal stretch for the rest of the year. (LW 10)

7) Baltimore Ravens - Honestly I wasn't sure how far to drop them after that shocking performance against the Jags on Monday night. They were bad and Joe Flacco is struggling. (LW 3)

8) Detroit Lions - The Lions have now dropped two straight at home and have been exposed after their great start.  (LW 5)

9) San Diego Chargers - It wasn't a terrible loss to the Jets this week, but did affirm my fear that this Charger team is just kinda ok. (LW 6)

10) New York Jets - Two straight wins and the Jets are showing some signs of life. (LW 13)

11) Atlanta Falcons - Great win on the road in Detroit. It appears as though the Falcons are back.  (LW 16)

12) Buffalo Bills - Coming off their bye with a 4-2 record is something Bills fans have to happy with.  (LW 11)

13) Chicago Bears - I have to admit, I did not see them beating the Bucs in London. Good win and this Bears team has now won two straight, which combined with the Lions two game losing streak has them back in the hunt. (LW 15)

14) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Just as some teams like Atlanta and the Jets are starting to get consistent, the Bucs are still erratic. (LW 7)

15) Cincinnati Bengals - Did you know the Bengals are 4-2? Probably not right? This was another team many saw as a #1 pick contender. But before Bengals fans complain too much about the lack of respect, three of their wins have come against teams with a combined 3-13 record. (LW 14)

16) Houston Texans - I sure hope you didn't have to face Arian Foster in fantasy last week. (LW 19)

17) Dallas Cowboys - Playing the Rams at home with AJ Feeley at QB is almost like a free win. (LW 21)

18) Oakland Raiders - They completely fell apart at the QB position and Carson Palmer looked every bit like a guy who hadn't played football in a year. (LW 12)

19) Philadelphia Eagles - After a bye week, they get Dallas at home in a game that can really be a signal that they've turned things around. (LW 18)

20) Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs have won three straight and seem to have righted the ship after their awful start. They could actually find themselves in first place next week.  (LW 27)

21) Tennessee Titans - Their good start to the season is fading away as they've lost two straight and got blown out by the Texans on Sunday. (LW 20)

22) Washington Redskins - No team has fallen faster in the power ranks over the last two weeks than the free-fallin Redskins. (LW 17)

23) Cleveland Browns - They won ugly at Seattle and I mean ugly. Like, hideously. (LW 26)

24) Jacksonville Jaguars - You have to be impressed by the way they played defense against the Ravens Monday night. The Baltimore offense has been good this year and the Jags nearly shut them out. (LW 25)

25) Denver Broncos - Tim Tebow played awful for three quarters, but they managed to squeeze out a win at the end against arguably the worst team in the league. There's excitement in Denver! (LW 24)

26) Carolina Panthers - Good win over the Redskins this week. I don't know how confident we can be in this team week to week, but they're growing. (LW 28)

27) Arizona Cardinals - They've now lost five straight and the early returns on the trade for Kevin Kolb are really bad. (LW 23)

28) Seattle Seahawks - There probably won't be a worse game this season than their 6-3 loss to the Browns. They were awful, the game was awful... Just awful all around. (LW 22)

29) Minnesota Vikings - Not a particularly good first start for Christian Ponder, but it was against the best team in the leauge. Plus, they might as well have him go through growing pains now. (LW 29)

30) Miami Dolphins - Of the three winless teams so far, Miami needs Andrew Luck the most. (LW 30)

31) St. Louis Rams - Even without Sam Bradford, they still only scored 2 points below their season average. As to make you a bit concerned about him in his sophomore year. (LW 31)

32) Indianapolis Colts - Peyton Manning is great, but he doesn't make up 55 points. This team wouldn't be a contender even with him. (LW 32)

NFL Power Rankings Week 7: Redemption For Eagles, Falcons & Jets

Call it redemption week. Those preseason contenders that have so far been disappointments all got wins this week and are suddenly believing that they're not quite out of it. The Eagles took the Redskins down a peg, Dallas lost in New England and suddenly Philly is only two games back in the NFC East. For a team that was 1-4 and running out of hope last week, that's not a bad position. Now they get a bye week and three straight winnable games at home afterward.

The other team to pull themselves out of the doldrums was the Atlanta Falcons, who scored a convincing win over the Panthers to even their season record at 3-3. Yes, beating the 1-5 Panthers isn't that huge of an accomplishment, but getting a win in the division combined with a loss by the Saints pulls them to within a game of the NFC South lead.

And the Jets... Well, they've probably got more work to do in their division than either the Eagles or Falcons, but after a week of in fighting and riding a three game losing stream, it has to feel good for them to get one in the win column.

All that said, here's your week 7 NFL power rankings.

1) Green Bay Packers - They were held to a season low 24 points against the Rams and still won by three touchdowns. LW (1)

2) New England Patriots - It was really a sloppy and uncharacteristic game for them against Dallas, but did anyone not think Tom Brady was going to walk them down the field for a score at the end? LW (3)

3) Baltimore Ravens - Coming off a resounding win over the Texans, the Ravens now have two straight weeks of what look like relatively easy games against Jacksonville and Arizona. After that comes the Steelers in Pittsburgh. (LW 5)

4) San Francisco 49ers They've won four straight in what most would have consider the hardest part of their schedule. It's not crazy to think they could be 9-1 or 8-2 by week 11. (LW 9)

5) Detroit Lions - For a team that's done so much losing to be be poor sports about it is pretty bewildering.  (LW 2)

6) San Diego Chargers - Had a bye this week and they'll need it. Their next four are at the Jets, at Kansas City, then Green Bay and Oakland at home. That stretch will tell us a lot about this team. (LW 8)

7) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - They've won and lost ugly this year, but that victory over the Saints was pretty. (LW 20)

8) New Orleans Saints - The Saints are good this year, but Tampa showed that they're not great. Especially on defense, where they're giving up the 7th most points per game in the league. (LW 4)

9) Pittsburgh Steelers - This is the hardest team to figure out in the NFL. They blew out the Titans two weeks ago and looked really pretty poor against the Jags this past week. After traveling to Arizona next week, they've got the Pats, Ravens and Cincy three straight weeks. We'll really learn about this team then. (LW 7)

10) New York Giants - They had their hands full with the Bills, but they made plays when they had to and now lead the NFC East. (LW 13)

11) Buffalo Bills - Ryan Fitzpatrick's fourth quarter magic wasn't there this week as he threw a killer pick late in the game as the Bills were threatening to score a go ahead TD. But for a team that many thought would be contending for the #1 pick this season, being 4-2 heading into their bye should have Bills fans pretty happy.  (LW 6)

12) Oakland Raiders - You have to fell bad for Oakland, just when they get things rolling they lose their starting QB for probably the whole year. Then David Garrard turns them down. They're a run first team, but I don't know that they can overcome Kyle Boller as their starting QB.... and would Carson Palmer off the street really be any better? (LW 11)

13) New York Jets - It wasn't the confidence inspiring win Jets fans were probably hoping for (at least from an offensive perspective), but it was at least a step in the right direct over the Dolphins on Monday night football. (LW 16)

14) Cincinnati Bengals - Did you know the Bengals are 4-2? Probably not right? This was another team many saw as a #1 pick contender. But before Bengals fans complain too much about the lack of respect, three of their wins have come against teams with a combined 3-13 record. (LW 15)

15) Chicago Bears - They got a blowout win over the Vikings, but really nothing about this Bears team inspires confidence in me. Take a look at their post bye schedule, they could really go 0-4. (LW 17)

16) Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons have yet to beat a team with a winning record this season. They'll get that chance next week on the road in Detroit.  (LW 19)

17) Washington Redskins - I had them ranked at #10 last week and despite the fact that I thought they'd earned it I was still uncomfortable. Now I know why. Their offense was just awful against the Eagles and their really good front seven wasn't all that impressive either. (LW 10)

18) Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles offense went dormant in the second half, but for the first time this season their defense actually made plays and picked them up. If they can play half that good on defense for the rest of the season, they really can make the playoffs. (LW 21)

19) Houston Texans - They got really worked by the Ravens and now face an important division matchup against the Titans next week. Fortunately, their poor division should keep them in the hunt while they wait for Andre Johnson to heal. (LW 12)

20) Tennessee Titans - I thought it was interesting that a dead and buried team traded for Brandon Lloyd and not the Titans. Unlike St Louis, the Titans are leading their division and have a real playoff shot. After losing Kenny Britt why not go after Lloyd? (LW 14)

21) Dallas Cowboys - It's shocking to see how Tony Romo has regressed this year. He's simply not the same player he was and it's not a physical issue. (LW 18)

22) Seattle Seahawks - One of the few teams to get less healthy during their bye as they announced yesterday that B Marcus Trufant would be placed on IR. (LW 22)

23) Arizona Cardinals - Head into their bye as losers of four straight. The top priority needs to be figuring out how to get Kolb Kolb playing better. (LW 23)

24) Denver Broncos - Started off the first week of the Tebow era by trading away probably his best WR. Not that Tebow even needs WRs (either because he can't throw or is too awesome, you decide). (LW 24)

25) Jacksonville Jaguars - Only have one win on the season, but they still have to play Indy twice... so there's three! (LW 28)

26) Cleveland Browns - Peyton Hillis, say hello to the Madden Curse. (LW 26)

27) Kansas City Chiefs - Coming off a bye week, they can play themselves right back into the AFC west race with back to back games against the Raiders and Chargers(LW 29)

28) Carolina Panthers - It's good to see a team have fun and play loose, but the Panthers are probably having a little too much fun for a 1-5 team. (LW 25)

29) Minnesota Vikings - All of Christian Ponder's fellow class of 2011 first round picks are starting now. Probably time for him to join them. (LW 27)

30) Miami Dolphins - The first team to almost admit wanting to "suck for Luck" and they're doing a great job of it! (LW 30)

31) St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford is hurt, but hey, they finally got around to giving him some help at WR. Kinda seems pointless now though. (LW 32)

32) Indianapolis Colts - This team was playing in the Superbowl in 2010. That's the last calender year and now they're the worst team in the NFL. (LW 31)

NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Bow To Our NFC North Overlords

All of sudden, Detroit is the center of the sports world with their Tigers in the ALCS and their Lions undefeated. And for a city that has suffered sports (well, in non ice sports) and economic-wise, you have to at least feel a bit good for them. Plus, the Lions are an easy team to root for. They were built the traditional way, drafting key players at premium spots and adding veteran free agents to supplement them. Sure, we're only five games in and things could go horribly wrong, especially since the oft injured Matt Stafford does take a pretty regular beating... but why worry about the unknown? All we know for sure is that right now, the Lions are good. Really good.

1) Green Bay Packers - Overcame a bad start in Atlanta to cruise to an easy win in the second half. They're on a collision course with our #2 team for NFC supremacy. LW (1)

2) Detroit Lions - Big win on their return to Monday Night football. This Lions team is very real and now they've got a surprisingly big matchup against the Niners next week.  (LW 2)

3) New England Patriots - Handled the Jets pretty easy at home. Now they face the Cowboys in the "Impossible to root for either team" bowl. LW (5)

4) New Orleans Saints - The Saints are kind of laying low this season and not getting a lot of press, despite the fact that they keep winning. (LW 4)

5) Baltimore Ravens - They now come fresh off a bye to face a suddenly undermanned Texans squad. Could really get a head of steam going. (LW 6)

6) Buffalo Bills - The latest benefactor of the Eagles traveling circus of errors.  (LW 3)

7) Pittsburgh Steelers - Ben Roethlisberger's performance one week or even one quarter has absolutely no correlation to his performance the next game or quarter. (LW 7)

8) San Diego Chargers - They've ridden a fairly soft schedule to a 4-1 record, but have rarely looked really good doing it. They always play well later in the year, but never have this kind of wins cushion. (LW 9)

9) San Francisco 49ers Hammered the Bucs this week to move shockingly to 4-1. If they beat the Lions next week, people will believe they're a rel contender. (LW 20)

10) Washington Redskins - Sat on their couch on watched their NFC East lead grow. (LW 14)

11) Oakland Raiders - Won one for Al, but also served notice to the rest of the AFC. (LW 15)

12) Houston Texans - The Texans have lost Mario Williams for the year meaning they'll be without their best offensive player (Andre Johnson) and arguably their best defender with a rough schedule coming up. (LW 8)

13) New York Giants - We were reminded that this is still a pretty thin and inconsistent Giants squad. (LW 10)

14) Tennessee Titans - Got hammered on the road in Pittsburgh and made us reassess just how good they are. Competitive, but not a contender. (LW 17)

15) Cincinnati Bengals - Saw a note on ESPN saying that all three of their wins this year are via fourth quarter comebacks. They're the anti Eagles. Not very productive, but they come up in big spots. (LW 22)

16) New York Jets - They just don't have the same swagger or magic as last year. When even Rex Ryan sounds defeated, it's bad news. (LW 12)

17) Chicago Bears - The Bears have done the impossible. Actually make me feel kind of bad for Jay Cutler. (LW 16)

18) Dallas Cowboys - It was a good bye for the with both Philly and NY losing. Now they get the Patriots, hope they really got their rest. (LW 11)

19) Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons offense goes back to struggling this week as they scored just 13 points in Tampa. Atlanta gave Matt Ryan plenty of weapons, but apparently neglected to give him anyone capable of protecting him. Sam Baker has to among the worst starting OTs in the NFL right now.  (LW 18)

20) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - They haven't looked really good all year, even in their wins it's been ugly. So you had to figure they'd either start playing well or regress. They clearly regressed. (LW 13)

21) Philadelphia Eagles - What is there to say? They're #3 in the NFL in yards, but are 1-4. It's all about untimely mistakes. (LW 19)

22) Seattle Seahawks - Seattle further confuses us with a big road win in New York. Even better, it looks like Clipboard Jesus gets another moment in the sun. (LW 28)

23) Arizona Cardinals - If they're in a position to draft a top QB this year after paying big to get Kevin Kolb... oh boy. Jobs will be lost. (LW 21)

24) Denver Broncos - Tim Tebow threw a screen to Knowshon Moreno, who proceeded to run Tebow in the hearts of the Mile High City. Finally, he'll get a chance to sink or swim. (LW 23)

25) Carolina Panthers - Like they have been a few times this year, they're in games against good team, but they can't turn that into wins. (LW 24)

26) Cleveland Browns - Interesting matchup for them this week off their bye. They head to Oakland in a matchup which should tell us a lot about each team. (LW 25)

27) Minnesota Vikings - Donovan McNabb beat Kevin Kolb in the battle of ex Eagles QBs. Although I expect if Kolb had Adrian Peterson the score would have been reversed. (LW 30)

28) Jacksonville Jaguars - Lost 4 straight and now face Pittsburgh and Baltimore back to back. Say a prayer for Blaine Gabbert will you? (LW 27)

29) Kansas City Chiefs - They've strung together some wins and now get a week off. They'll face Oakland and San Diego when they get back which means they could really get themselves back into the AFC West picture with two wins.  (LW 31)

30) Miami Dolphins - They will send Matt Moore out to face a desperate Jets team next week. Maybe include him in your Gabbert prayers. (LW 26)

31) Indianapolis Colts - An awful season like this is worth it if it means Colts fans get to watch Peyton Manning pass the torch to Andrew Luck. (LW 29)

32) St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford is taking a beating, the Rams are just not the up and comer people expected and now they go on the road to Green Bay. The line is already at 15.5  (LW 32)

NFL Power Rankings Week 4: We've Got A New Worst Team In The NFL!

Three weeks into the season the NFL is turned upside down. Preseason favorites like the Eagles and Falcons have seriously underwhelmed, while perennial punching bags like Detroit and Buffalo are doing some punching of their own. We're also seeing a trend among the top teams of really good offenses and not great defenses. Of the top five teams in our ranks, only the Lions can boast a top 5 defense. Two other top five teams, Green Bay and New England, actually have bottom five defenses...

1) Green Bay Packers - Went into Chicago and took it to the Bears. It is a huge bummer that they do not play Detroit until week 11. We need that game now!! LW (2)

2) Detroit Lions - l gave them serious consideration for the top spot this week. However, I'm not sure whether I should be really encouraged or slightly worried about the fact that they had to come back from 20 down to beat the Vikings. On one hand, that's an amazing feat on the road. On the other hand, why are down 20 to the Vikings? (LW 3)

3) Buffalo Bills - The Bills still own the highest scoring offense in the NFL and now they have a big signature win under their belt. Huge win against New England to finally get that money off their back.  (LW 5)

4) New Orleans Saints - New Orleans has had a rough schedule to start the year and has come out 2-1. They can score on anyone, but their defense is very suspect. (LW 6)

5) New England Patriots - Mistake filled loss in Buffalo after a dominating start to the season. For years the Pats have enjoyed racking up wins in one of the worst divisions in the NFL, but suddenly there's two other contenders to deal with and frankly the Pats have not fared well in their own division dating back to the end of last season. LW (1)

6) Baltimore Ravens - They crushed St Louis, but then again Sam Bradford and co are making a serious claim for the worst team in the NFL. That said, they played really well and bounced back from their letdown against Tennessee. (LW 9)

7) Pittsburgh Steelers - So are the Colts not as bad as we thought or is Pittsburgh a bit overrated? Probably a bit of both. The Steelers did get a win this past week, but only barely over a Colts team who is arguably the worst in the NFL. (LW 10)

8) Houston Texans - Losing on the road in New Orleans isn't the worst thing in the world, but it did some expose some flaws in their new "revamped" defense. (LW 7)

9) San Diego Chargers - Much like the Steelers, the Chargers struggled to beat one of the worst teams in the NFL. They're 2-1 and they're talented, but the Chargers haven't actually looked good once this year. (LW 14)

10) New York Giants - They got a great win over Philly, finally breaking that six game losing streak against them. Even though this was a much closer game, they actually played better than they did in the blowout of the Rams last week. (LW 15)

11) Dallas Cowboys - Got a very ugly win over the Redskins last night in which all their scoring game from six FGs. Much like the Chargers, this is a team with talent and is 2-1, but hasn't actually looked good even once this year. (LW 16)

12) New York Jets - Oakland isn't a bad team, but the Jets fancy themselves as not just mere contenders but as true Super Bowl favorites. That wasn't a Super Bowl performance. (LW 4)

13) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - It wasn't pretty, but the Bucs got a big division win over the Falcons in Tampa this week. They actually have a favorable schedule over the next couple weeks where they could put some wins together. (LW 17)

14) Washington Redskins - The Redskins defense looked really good against Dallas this week and actually did not allow a TD. Unfortunately their offense was terrible. Rex Grossman has quickly erased the early optimism and the Tim Hightower hype train has derailed. (LW 12)

15) Oakland Raiders - I really don't know what to make of this team. They've got some big play capability and they've got an opportunistic defense. What they could really use is consistency. (LW 19)

16) Chicago Bears - The Bears are now 1-2 with two losses to NFC playoff rivals. They've had a brutal schedule to start the year, but unfortunately it doesn't get a whole lot easier over the next four or five weeks. (LW 13)

17) Tennessee Titans - They ground out another win, but lost Kenny Britt in the process. With Chris Johnson off to a terrible start, it's getting hard to see where the Titans are going to get offense from going forward. (LW 22)

18) Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons offense goes back to struggling this week as they scored just 13 points in Tampa. Atlanta gave Matt Ryan plenty of weapons, but apparently neglected to give him anyone capable of protecting him. Sam Baker has to among the worst starting OTs in the NFL right now.  (LW 11)

19) Philadelphia Eagles - A nightmare game against the Giants where the Eagles were poor is just about eery facet of the game. The Eagles offense is probably going to fine with Michael Vick healthy, but their defense is just flat out bad. Not sure what can be done to fix it either. It really can't be understated how bad of a loss that was to the Giants and now the Eagles face a pretty tough schedule after this week. (LW 8)

20) San Francisco 49ers The Niners are actually 2-1 and honestly I don't know how. This really does not look like a good team. (LW 21)

21) Arizona Cardinals - What an awful loss on the road to a bad Seattle team. The Cards really could have made a statement of intent in that division and they failed. (LW 21)

22) Cincinnati Bengals - Managed just 8 points this week, the second least of any team. Andy Dalton has regressed quickly. (LW 20)

23) Denver Broncos - Another poor outing from Kyle Orton, although he's not getting much help it is hard to see what Denver is hoping to gain by sending him out there. (LW 23)

24) Carolina Panthers - Cam Newton didn't throw for many yards this time out, but he did limit his mistakes and got his first career win as a result. (LW 24)

25) Cleveland Browns - Winning ugly still counts as winning. The Browns are a young team, I just don't know if I see the makings of a contender anytime in the next couple years. (LW 28)

26) Miami Dolphins - Miami had a tough schedule to start the year but were at least competitive. Then they go to Cleveland and look terrible. (LW 25)

27) Jacksonville Jaguars - Blaine Gabbert was "meh" in his debut, but that's ok. This year is all about him learning for the Jags at this point. (LW 26)

28) Seattle Seahawks - Seattle gets their first win last week, but at this point you have to wonder whether that's a good thing. You need more suck if you want more Luck. (LW 30)

29) Indianapolis Colts - After some really awful games to start the season, Indy was at least competitive at home playing in primetime against the Steelers. (LW 31)

30) Minnesota Vikings - If NFL games were only 2 quarters long, the Vikings would be great. Games are four quarters long however and the Vikings stink. (LW 29)

31) Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs fall to 0-3 but are at least competitive for the first time this season. Plus, their offense made it to double digits!  (LW 32)

32) St. Louis Rams - We've got a new worst team in the league this week as the Rams get blown out for the 3rd straight week. The Chiefs are probably less talented, but they at least had a shot. The Rams have not been in any game late this year and it's scary to see how Sam Bradford has regressed. Rams fans will certainly be hoping it's just a sophomore slump. (LW 27)

Week 3 NFL Power Rankings: AFC East Dominates The Top 5

We are now two weeks in to the NFL season and things are starting to even out. Some of the teams who really impressed last week, like the Ravens, were big letdowns on Sunday. However, week one disappointments like Pittsburgh bounced back in a big way. Like last week, before you read our power rankings remember that we're weighting heavier on performance this season than preseason expectations. That's why you're going to see some big movers this early on and it's also why the Bills are a legit top five team right now. That may not be the case next week, but I don't see how you can objectively look at the performances and say they haven't been as impressive as anyone this season.

1) New England Patriots - Tom Brady follows up his 500 yard week one show with a 400+ yard performance in week two. The Pats defense has given a fair amount of points, but it doesn't really have to be dominant if their offense is going to put up 30+ every week. LW (2)

2) Green Bay Packers - The best team from last year faced the worst team from last year and frankly didn't look great doing it. There's serious questions about this defense especially after losing Nick Collins for the year. That said, this team does know how to win. LW (1)

3) Detroit Lions - They flat out ran up the score on the Chiefs in a 48-3 demolishing of the Chiefs this week. Yes, the Chiefs are probably the worst team in the NFL right now, but anytime you beat another NFL team that bad the league should be taking notice. The Lions are for real. (LW 9)

4) New York Jets - The Jets got a win in week one without looking very good. That was not the case in week two as they took apart the hapless Jags. The Jets now start a brutal run of three road games at Oakland, Baltimore and New England. (LW 10)

5) Buffalo Bills - People laughed when I had the Bills in the top 10 last week and while this may feel high, take a look at the overall offensive stats and tell me who the highest scoring team in the NFL is. They host the NFL's 3rd highest scoring offense next week when the Patriots come to town. Then we get to see what the Bills are made of. (LW 7)

6) New Orleans Saints - So far we've seen a predictable loss on the road to Green Bay and a predictable win at home over Chicago. This Saints team is good, but are they better than we think? Hard to say just yet. (LW 12)

7) Houston Texans - The Texans haven't had the toughest schedule to start the year, but they've looked good and what else can you ask of them? At just 10 points allowed per game, the Texans have the stingiest defense in the NFL so far. Things get much tougher as they face the Saints and Steelers in the next two weeks. (LW 6)

8) Philadelphia Eagles - Lost a very close game in Atlanta where you could reasonably say they looked like the better team. Obviously the question now is the health of Michael Vick and whether he'll be ready when the Giants come to Philly this weekend. (LW 3)

9) Baltimore Ravens - What a huge letdown by the Ravens. After an impressive week one blowout of the Steelers, the Ravens were just awful against the Titans. Joe Flacco was awful, their defense was poor... It was a very concerning week for them. (LW 4)

10) Pittsburgh Steelers - Seattle is arguably the worst team in the NFL, but the Steelers still impressed with a big shutout win. It doesn't erase the memory of getting blown out by the Ravens however. That said, things do stay pretty easy next week as the Steelers go on the road to face the Colts. (LW 20)

11) Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons avoided falling into an 0-2 hole with a big win over the Eagles this week, but their defense remains a real concern. They've given up the 2nd most points per game in the NFL so far this season.  (LW 19)

12) Washington Redskins - The Redskins go to 2-0 yet drop four spots in our ranks. Rex Grossman threw a couple o picks and looked more like the guy we expected him to be. That said, if they keep winning who cares? And they have three winnable games ahead with Seattle, the Giants and Vikings. (LW 8)

13) Chicago Bears - That the Bears lost in New Orleans is not the worst thing, but they really didn't look very good doing it. The Bears will be around all year, but it's still hard to get a read on exactly how good they are. (LW 5)

14) San Diego Chargers - Made a game of it at the end last week against the Pats, but still lost the chance at what could have been a signature win. Much like the Bears, I'd feel better about the Chargers after seeing them get a good road win. (LW 11)

15) New York Giants - The final score of Monday night's game against the Rams looked like it was an impressive win, but it really didn't feel that way watching it. The Rams moved the ball at will on the Giants defense, but just struggled finishing drives. That's probably not something they can rely on next week against the Giants. (LW 21)

16) Dallas Cowboys - Looking at the description of Tony Romo's injuries sustained this week, it's hard to tell whether he was in a football game or a car accident. (LW 16)

17) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - I'm not sure whether to be impressed or a little discouraged by their comeback win against the Vikings. Yes, they needed a win, they got it and that's good, but this team doesn't have the look of a playoff contender. (LW 23)

18) Arizona Cardinals - The Cards are a work in progress and talent-wise I think they're near the level of where the Redskins are. So to lose a close game to them on the road isn't terrible. They'll be competitive in the NFC West. (LW 13)

19) Oakland Raiders - Their defense absolutely melted down against the Bills last week allowing five straight TD drives in the second half as Buffalo came back to beat them. Their offense has been pretty good though. (LW 14)

20) Cincinnati Bengals - I thought starting Andy Dalton this year would be a disaster, but he's really played well. Would have been more impressive if he got another win though. (LW 18)

21) San Francisco 49ers Thy really had Dallas on the ropes and frankly choked the game away. Dallas is the kind of team the Niners should be beating at home if they see themselves as playoff contenders in the NFC West. (LW 15)

22) Tennessee Titans - Got a really good win over Baltimore this week. If they can get Chris Johnson going, they'll score some points this year. (LW 26)

23) Denver Broncos - The Broncos appear as though they'll be this years' running drama in the NFL... probably more interesting than watching them play. (LW 22)

24) Carolina Panthers - Cam Newton threw for a lot of yards again, but he came back to earth in a big way with three picks. That's ok though, because all young QBs are going to have bad weeks where they turn the ball over. What you need to see next from him is that bounces back and learns from it. (LW 17)

25) Miami Dolphins - They've had a rough schedule to start the season and it doesn't get much easier. They have three straight road games coming up, two of which are against the Chargers and Jets. (LW 24)

26) Jacksonville Jaguars - After watching them against the Jets, I have no idea how they got a win in week one. They were awful and it all started with Josh McCown. After seeing rookies Cam Newton and Andy Dalton have early success, Jags fans are wanting to see Blaine Gabbert sooner rather than later. (LW 22)

27) St. Louis Rams - The Rams have opened up the year with two pretty convincing losses. Combine that with all their injuries and they sure don't look like the sleeper team many predicted them to be. (LW 27)

28) Cleveland Browns - Got a win over the Colts this week which isn't too impressive, but Colt McCoy played well and Peyton Hillis got going so there were encouraging signs. (LW 30)

29) Minnesota Vikings - In each of the past two weeks the Vikings have built a first half lead and squandered in in the second half. On Sunday, they gave up 24 second half points to the Bucs. (LW 32)

30) Seattle Seahawks - Here's where we start figure who is the worst team in the NFL. Seattle is certainly in that conversation after getting shut out in Pittsburgh. (LW 28)

31) Indianapolis Colts - They're just awful. No doubt that Peyton Manning would make them better, but would he alone even make them a playoff contender? I don't think so. (LW 31)

32) Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs offense is scoring an average of five points per game. Their defense is giving up an average of forty-four points per game. It's shocking how bad they are.  (LW 29)
