NFL Injury Report: Eagles' Evan Mathis to have surgery

The Philadelphia Eagles' 2012 season came to a close on Sunday and while the big news in Philadelphia is the departure of head coach Andy Reid, a few Eagles will go into the offseason nursing injuries.

While the Eagles had plenty of issues along the offensive line this season, guard Evan Mathis was not one of them. Mathis started all 16 games for the Eagles and was regarded as one of the better guards in the NFL. While he finished the season strong, Mathis will need ankle surgery this offseason to remove bone chips.

Philadelphia will have a few other players nursing injuries into the offseason, but appear to have escaped Week 17 without any additional long-term injuries. Linebacker Casey Matthews suffered a concussion against the Giants. Matthews joined linebacker Mychal Kendricks and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox as players who have recently suffered concussions.

As the attention turns to recovery, one player to watch will be quarterback Nick Foles. He ended the season on injured reserve due to a hand injury. Foles is expected to contend for the starting job in 2013, but his status could be impacted if the injury lingers too far into offseason workouts.
