Philadelphia 76ers Hire Tony DiLeo As General Manager, According To Report

The Philadelphia 76ers stayed inside their organization for their new GM, promoting Tony DiLeo to replace the role vacated by Rod Thorn, reports CBS' Ken Berger.

DiLeo has been with the 76ers in some capacity since 1990-91, including a spell as the team's interim head coach following the firing of Maurice Cheeks in 2008, mostly behind the scenes in the team's basketball operations department. DiLeo was involved in the four-way trade that essentially brought Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala.

Berger also reports that while Thorn will remain the team's president for the time being, DiLeo will eventually take over that position. Thorn had operated as the team's president and general manager for the 2011-2012 season after the resignation of Ed Stefanski from the general manager position. Stefanski had also been the president and general manager for a time, and it appears DiLeo will also hold both titles sometime down the road.

Philadelphia 76ers GM Search: Rockets' Sam Hinkie Emerges As Candidate

The Philadelphia 76ers' list of possible general manager candidates now includes Sam Hinkie, currently of the Houston Rockets.

The Sixers reached out to Houston, but it remains uncertain whether or not Hinkie will leave his spot to join The City of Brotherly Love. However, the executive vice president of basketball operations for Houston is in the thick of the conversation to replace Rod Thorn in Philly, according to SI.com.

Hinkie has been one of the front runners in the NBA's analytics wave and has certainly learned how to run a team from one of the league's best, Rockets GM Daryl Morey.

The other candidates vying for the Sixers' position are ESPN analyst and ex-Portland Trailblazers assistant GM Tom Penn, former New Orleans GM Jeff Bower and Boston assistant GM Mike Zarren.

No timetable is known for when the job needs to be filled.

Sixers GM Search: Boston's Mike Zarren Emerges As Potential Candidate, According To Report

Boston Celtics assistant GM Mike Zarren has emerged as a potential candidate for the Philadelphia 76ers open GM position, according to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated. Remarkably, the Sixers pulled off last week's blockbuster deal involving Andrew Bynum and Andre Iguodala without a general manager. Danny Ferry, Jeff Bower, and Tom Penn were three names rumored for the position, but Zarren is a new and relatively unknown candidate. Amick reports that it could now be between Bower and Zarren:

Boston Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren is a serious candidate for the Sixers general manager position, sources with knowledge of the search told SI.com.

With incumbent Rod Thorn expected to transition to a consultant role once his replacement is found, the Sixers were reportedly deciding between former Portland assistant general manager and ESPN analyst Tom Penn and former New Orleans general manager Jeff Bower. Penn was considered the frontrunner just weeks ago, but sources say his candidacy has taken a serious hit while Zarren and Bower continue to jockey for the job.

Zarren's reputation is as an advanced stats wiz, which would likely be a departure from Thorn's philosophy. But with Doug Collins and company in win-now mode with Bynum in the fold, the position has become much more appealing.

Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Search: Jeff Bower To Reportedly Meet Sixers

The Philadelphia 76ers general manager search continues. Former New Orleans Hornets front office executive Jeff Bower is reportedly going to meet with the Sixers this week to talk about the general manager position opening (via Ken Berger).

Bower was the general manager of the Hornets from 2002-2003, 2005-2010. He also served as interim head coach of the team during the 2009-2010 season when the Hornets fired Byron Scott. Bower is a native of Hollidaysburg, Pa. He is not alone as a candidate for the general manager position.

During the NBA's Summer League in Las Vegas, former Portland Trail Blazers front office executive Tom Penn reportedly met with Sixers managing partner Joshua Harris and interviewed for the position on July 22.

The person who lands the Sixers general manager job will eventually replace Philadelphia's current president, Rod Thorn.

76ers General Manager Search: Tom Penn Is Sixers GM Candidate, Reportedly Interviewed

The Philadelphia 76ers have a new general manager candidate in former Portland Trail Blazers front office executive Tom Penn. Penn has reportedly met with Philadelphia managing partner Joshua Harris in Las Vegas and interviewed the Sixers job (via Ken Berger).

Penn worked for the Trail Blazers as Vice President of Basketball Operations and Assistant General Manager from 2007-2010. Penn currently works with ESPN as an NBA analyst. Before working with the Trail Blazers he was an assistant general manager and legal counsel for the Memphis Grizzlies from 2000-2007. Penn had previously been linked to the Orlando Magic general manager job this offseason. The Magic general manager job ultimately went to Rob Hennigan.

The Sixers previously offered the general manager job to Danny Ferry in June but he ended up taking the Atlanta Hawks open general manager position instead.

76ers General Manager Search: Danny Ferry Named Hawks GM

According to a report from philly.com, Danny Ferry has decided to pull out of the running to become the Philadelphia 76ers general manager in favor of the same position with the Atlanta Hawks.

Ferry was widely considered the favorite in Philly but it just never came to pass.

The ex-NBA sharpshooter was the Cleveland Cavaliers general manager from 2005-2010 and reached the NBA Finals once only to get swept by the San Antonio Spurs. Ferry took a ton of heat for having LeBron James but consistently failing to put pieces around him to secure Cleveland's first championship.

Ferry released the following statement Monday morning:

"I'm very excited to be here today with the opportunity to help build something special for the Hawks and the Atlanta community," Ferry said. "The Hawks are dedicated to creating consistent success for our fans and doing so with the right people and the right way. I look forward to an exciting future together."

Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Search: Top Candidate Danny Ferry Reportedly Offered Hawks GM Job

Could it be time to return to the drawing board for the Philadelphia 76ers in their general manager search? The top candidate to take over for Rod Thorn in Philadelphia, Danny Ferry, has reportedly been offered the general manager job of the Atlanta Hawks (via Yahoo! Sports). No deal has been completed with the Hawks, but talks are reportedly serious between Ferry and the organization.

Ferry met with the Sixers a couple of weeks ago and did not break off talks after the meeting. Ferry is currently with the San Antonio Spurs as a front office executive for the second time in his career. Ferry was a general manager with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-2010. If Ferry takes the Atlanta job, he would replace Hawks general manager Rick Sund.

Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Search: Sixers Meet with Danny Ferry, According To Report

The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly met with Spurs front office executive Danny Ferry during the weekend about the general manager/president job with the Sixers (via Yahoo! Sports). Ferry has become a front runner for the position with another candidate (Bucks general manager John Hammond) seeming unlikely to leave his post.

The report about Ferry meeting with the Sixers also reveals that current Philadelphia head coach Doug Collins is pushing for more power and has been spearheading the move to replace Sixers president Rod Thorn. Yahoo sources also said that Collins supported Ferry's candidacy for the position. Thorn has one year remaining on his three-year deal with the Sixers.

The Yahoo report also states that the Sixers are uncertain about how much power to give Collins, who guided Philadelphia to the playoffs the past two seasons, including this year's run to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Search: Danny Ferry Tops List Of Candidates, According To Report

With Philadelphia 76ers general manager Rod Thorn rumored to be seriously contemplating retirement and the team opening a search for replacements, Doug Collins is reportedly pushing for Danny Ferry to be named Thorn's successor.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Ferry has emerged as the front-runner for the position, and the two sides have already opened discussions.

Ferry was the Cleveland Cavaliers' general manager from 2005-2010, a period during which the Cavaliers achieved much success. But he failed to build a worthy supporting cast for LeBron James, and some of his roster decisions -- like acquiring Antawn Jamison and his oversized contract -- might have helped to push James out of Cleveland.

After resigning from his position in Cleveland with a month remaining on his contract in 2010, Ferry has worked with the Spurs for the last two seasons.

76ers Interviewing Replacements For Rod Thorn

Its appears that the rumors of Rod Thorn possibly retiring have some legs behind it as the Philadelphia 76ers are currently interviewing replacements for Thorn according to a report from Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News.

According to Cooney, possible candidates for the position include former New Orleans GM Jeff Bower, San Antonio VP of operations Danny Ferry, Oklahoma City assistant general manager Troy Weaver, Atlanta general manager Rick Sund, San Antonio assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey, and Milwaukee Bucks general manager John Hammond.

Thorn would be a part of the interview process along with owner Josh Harris, CEO Adam Aron, and head coach Doug Collins.

Cooney is reporting that the interview process could take over a year to complete, which would be the end of Thorn's three year contract with the club. At that point Thorn would slide to a part-time consulting role with the team for five seasons, a provision in his contract.
