U.S. Open Championship Winner 2012: Webb Simpson Wins At Olympic Club, Jim Furyk Falters Late

Jim Furyk held at least a share of the lead at the 2012 U.S. Open through 15 holes Sunday. A bogey on No. 16 put him one shot back from Webb Simpson, however, who shot a 2-under 68 and waited in the clubhouse for Furyk to finish. As the weather turned gloomy at the Olympic Club, Simpson won his first major title from the warm indoors.

Simpson's day got off to a rocky start. He bogeyed holes No. 2 and 5 to put himself at 2-over through five holes. He then reeled off birdies on four of his next five holes to put himself within a stroke of Furyk. He parred the rest of the way, then waited and hoped for the normally disciplined Furyk to make mistakes.

Furyk bogeyed on the par-3 No. 13 to give Simpson a share of the lead. On No. 16, his shot to the green took a bad bounce off the front edge of the rough, and rolled back nearly to the lip of the bunker. What should have been a manageable putt for par turned into a difficult chip and Furyk had to settle for bogey, giving Simpson the lead for good.

Furyk finished in a tie for fourth after a bogey on No. 18 put him at 3-over for the Open. Michael Thompson shot 67 on Sunday, shaking off a 75 and a 75 on Friday and Saturday to make a late rush up the leaderboard, tying Graeme McDowell for second place one stroke back from Simpson. David Toms, Padraig Harrington, John Peterson and Jason Dufner all finished at 3-over overall, just two shots off the lead.
