The 2012 British Open was everything you could want in a major championship. It had big names at the top of the leaderboard, drama on Sunday and great storylines. It was a tournament to remember, except for Adam Scott.
Ernie Els found a way to take home his fourth career major at Royal Lytham's and St. Anne's by playing superb golf. The South African was sublime on Sunday, leading to his victory with a score of 7-under for the tournament. However, it was Scott who lost an overwhelming lead on the final back nine of the weekend.
Scott bogeyed his final four holes, including the 18th to ultimately cost him what would have been his first major title.
Nobody else was within shouting distance when the dust settled, with Tiger Woods not being much of a factor. Woods played even through first five holes before ending the competitive phase of his Open Championship with a triple bogey on the sixth.
Pennsylvania's own Jim Furyk finished his weekend with a 71, moving him up in the final standings slightly. Furyk tied for 34th place when all was set and done.

The 2012 British Open concluded Sunday, and the winner wasn't who many expected, but it was one we've all heard of before. Ernie Els carded a 68 2-under par, at Royal Lytham at St. Annes to edge 54-hole leader Adam Scott by one stroke and collect his fourth major championship of his career.
The South African made a dramatic birdie putt on his final hole, and then waited as Scott made bogey on his final four holes to let his seemingly insurmountable lead slip away.
Scott, who finished with a final round score of 75 (5-over par), had a chance to force a three-hole playoff but his championship-tying putt -- which was setup by a poor tee shot that found a fairway bunker -- just slid off the edge of the cup.
Els' comeback was highlighted by playing the final nine holes at 4-under par. Els was the only player in the top six to finish the day at 3-over par or better.
Overall, Els finished at 7-under par while Scott (-6) finished ahead of Tiger Woods (-3), Brandt Snedeker (-3), Luke Donald (-2) and Graeme McDowell (-2), respectively.

Round 3 of the 2012 British Open is underway, and Pennsylvania native Jim Furyk's performance is in the books. Furyk shot a 1-over par 71, better than Thursday's 72 but a step down from the 70 he shot in Round 2. He stands at 3-over for the tournament so far, currently good for 52nd place.
That standing isn't likely to hold as other golfers finish up and the leaders tee off. The top 10 on the leaderboard begin around 9:30 a.m. Odds-on favorite Tiger Woods tees off at 10:10 a.m. and tournament leader Brandt Snedeker follows soon after at 10:20 a.m. Snedeker opens the round 10-under, with Woods just four strokes behind at 6-under par. Thorbjorn Olesen is fourth at 5-under-par after a 4-under round on Friday. There is a group of five golfers tied for fifth at 4-under. American Brandt Snedeker had an excellent second round at the 2012 British Open as he shot a 6-under, 64 for the round and is currently sitting at 10-under after two rounds, and is the current leader. Snedeker started off hot by birding four of his six holes, and for the day had six birdies and had no bogies for his round.
Snedeker has a two-stroke lead over Adam Scott who is 2-under for the day through 15 holes. Scott has three birdies and one bogey so far in round two. These two are creating a small buffer between the rest of the field.
Tiger Woods is still hanging around as he is tied for third place and so far through his second round he is 1-under after 12 holes and six strokes back of the lead.

When you tie a course record, you're usually feeling pretty good about your standing on the leaderboard.
Adam Scott certainly should be in a great frame of mind after dominating in Round 1 of the 2012 British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
The Australian shot a 6-under 64, giving him the outright lead and aforementioned course record. Scott is one stroke in front of Zach Johnson, Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Lawrie, who are all finished with their opening 18 holes.
Tiger Woods played very well and looks to be a true force again in the Open Championship. He was able to negotiate the tricky course and ended up 3-under, tied for fifth overall and putting himself in nice position to make a run.
Phil Mickelson was a disappointment, ending Thursday afternoon 3-over. The American had a tough time putting, and ultimately it cost him. Rory McIlroy is right in the chase, only three strokes off the lead with a 3-under.
As for the local side of things, West Chester, PA native Jim Furyk kept himself in the hunt, seven shots off the pace with a 1-over 71.

The 2012 British open from Royal Lytham & St. Annes kicked off early this morning at approximately 1:19 a.m. EST. Because of the five hour time difference from the East coast, golf fans awoke to several players who have already or are close to completing the first of four rounds in the tournament.
Australian golfer Adam Scott is the early leader after shooting a six-under par, 64 on Thursday. American Paul Lawrie is right on his heels, tied for second place with Scotland's Paul Lawrie after shooting a five-under par, 65 in round one.
Tiger Woods, the favorite to win, is currently tied for sixth place through the first 16 holes as he's currently shooting three-under par.

The world's best golfers tee off in the 2012 British Open on Thursday. Currently, Tiger Woods is favored to win, but the American golfer has not won a major tournament in four years. He faces some stiff competition from marquee names like Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson and defending Open champ Darren Clarke.
Golf fans need to set their alarms if they plan not to miss a beat from the tournament. Woods, Watson and Clarke are among the golfers who tee off at 4:30 a.m. Eastern on Thursday. ESPN will carry live coverage of the British Open, beginning at 4 a.m. and running through 3 p.m. That will be followed by a recap and highlights from the first day of action at Royal Lytham.
Fans can also watch online via ESPN3, which begins streaming coverage at 4 a.m. through 3 p.m.

Tiger Woods, despite not winning a major championship in four years and being up and down recently, is definitely the odds-on favorite to win the British Open which begins on Thursday.
It's safe to say that fans will be tuning in to see what Tiger does, and if he fails it will be an utter disappointment. For Tiger, a three-time British Open champion, it is his tournament for the taking since he's made it clear that even though he's not the same player he was four years ago, he's still better than most of the field.
Vegasinsider.com has faith in Woods, at least, giving him 8-to-1 odds to win his fourth British Open this weekend. Local favorite Rory McIlroy is also picked to have a good chance to win, with 10-to-1 odds. Other European players, such as Lee Westwood (12-to-1), Luke Donald (15-to-1), and Padraig Harrington (15-to-1) rounded out the top five.

West Chester native Jim Furyk is looking to rebound at the 2012 British Open from his collapse in the U.S. Open. Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open champ, had a one stroke lead on the final day at the Olympic Club in San Francisco before he scored bogey on three of the final six holes.
After a practice round at Royal Lytham & St. Annes on Tuesday, Furyk said ''I have always had a big drive to succeed and play well and work hard. If I play poorly, it makes me mad and makes me want to do better next time. If I play well and come so close, it's disappointing but I'll work hard either way. At the end of my career, I'm not going to look back and have any regrets.''
Furyk also said the damp conditions at the British Open won't get to him. ''It doesn't matter to me, I've done low in both (good and bad conditions). I've shot 25 and 28 under to win golf tournaments and I've gone around in even par to win golf tournaments. You just adjust to the conditions." (via Fox Sports)

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods headline the field at the 141st British Open.
Adam Scott shot a 2-under 68 to finish the third round at 11-under and take a four stroke lead over Brandt Snedeker and Graeme McDowell, both at 7-under, into the final round of the 141st British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
Scott and Snedeker were paired together in the final group on Saturday, and they could not have had a different day. Snedeker had six bogeys on the day, including four of the last five holes on the back nine. The Australian took advantage of Snedeker's troubles, hitting back to back birdies on the seventh and eighth to grab the outright lead. Snedeker was able to recover with birdies on 16 and 18, but the damage was done. Scott cruised to an even par back nine, with a boget at 13 as his only blemish on the day.
Tiger Woods sits in fourth place at 6-under after the third round, shooting an even par 70 to stay at 6-under for the tournament. Woods had a horrible start to the day, bogeying holes one and three before making a run before the turn. Woods birdied six, seven and nine to end what was a roller coaster front nine. Woods had a rather uneventful back nine, with a bogey at 15 to finish his day.
