Phillies Vs. Brewers Final Score: Kyle Kendrick Pitches Gem As Phillies Salvage Split

The Philadelphia Phillies were able to salvage a split in their four-game series with the Brewers, winning by a decisive score of 8-0 Sunday afternoon. Kyle Kendrick pitched well for the Phillies, going eight scoreless innings in which he gave up just three hits and struck out seven.

Outfielder Domonic Brown provided much of the offense for Philadelphia, gathering three hits and driving in four runs. Second baseman Michael Martinez also chipped in with a home run, his second in 54 at-bats this season. In total, the Phillies put together 14 hits, including 10 off of Brewers starter Randy Wolf. Wolf went seven innings in the loss, giving up five runs while striking out four and walking two.

The Phillies welcome the Cincinnati Reds to town for a four-game series starting tomorrow at 7:05 pm.

Philadelphia Vs. Milwaukee Game Preview: Phillies Look To Split Series Against Brewers

Chase Utley and Ryan Howard combined for four of the Phillies' seven hits, as a big second inning for the Philadelphia bats and excellent performances by both Cole Hamels and Jonathan Paplebon secured a 4-3 win against Milwaukee in Miller Park yesterday.

Today, at 2:10 p.m. Eastern, Philadelphia (55-65) looks to split the series against the Brewers (54-65) before returning to Citizens Bank Park for a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Taking the mound for the Phillies is Kyle Kendrick (5-9, 4.53 ERA), who is coming off of an incredible seven inning shutout performance against the Miami Marlins this past Tuesday.

He will face former Philly and lefty Randy Wolf (3-9, 5.65 ERA), who is currently enduring the worst ERA of his career. The ten-year veteran spent his first eight major league seasons with the Phillies before becoming a free agent in 2006. Since then, he has seen time in Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston and eventually his current home in Milwaukee, beginning in 2009.

Since leaving Philadelphia, Wolf has eight career starts against the Phillies, where he is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA. His last outing against Philadelphia was at Citizens Bank Park on July 23, where he was issued a no decision after a Francisco Rodriguez blown save in the ninth.

Offensively, the Phillies have performed well against Milwaukee during this series. Over the past three days, Philadelphia has amassed 25 total base hits and scored 10 runs. Ryan Howard has even hit safely over his past 12 starts at Miller Park. The key to this series then, as was demonstrated last night by Cole Hamels' 10 strikeout performance over 7.2 innings of work, has been limiting the Milwaukee offense -- a seemingly tall task for Kendrick, whose approach to this challenge is simple.

I'm going to go out there and try to pitch well, keep us in games and go as long as I can in the game, go deep as I can.

Phillies-Brewers Final Score: Phils Homer Their Way To 4-3 Win

The Philadelphia Phillies took care of the Milwaukee Brewers, beating the Crew 4-3 at Miller Park on Saturday night.

Cole Hamels picked up his 15th win of the season with another impressive outing. The southpaw saw his scoreless innings streak snapped in the second, but went on to only allow two more runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings. Hamels also only walked one and struck out 10.

The Phillies got the job done with home runs off the bats of John Mayberry and Erik Kratz. Both took losing pitcher Michael Fiers deep in the second inning with Mayberry's being a two-run shot.

Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each had two hits including a pair of doubles for the hulking first baseman.

The Brewers also hit a couple of home runs, with Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez taking Hamels over the wall. Braun's chased Hamels from the game when his two-run blast made it a 4-3 game.

Philly will try to split the series on Sunday afternoon with Kyle Kendrick on the hill.

Phillies Vs. Brewers Preview: Cole Hamels Looks To Extend Shutout Streak

Cole Hamels will go for a third straight complete game shutout on Saturday night in Milwaukee, looking to match the remarkable feat set by his pitching staff colleague Cliff Lee in 2011. Hamels has been dominant this month, breezing through two outings against the Marlins and Braves. He could very well be pitching his way into Cy Young contention, and while he claims he's simply trying to start win streaks, that has to be a motivating factor down a stretch run where the Phillies will be playing mostly for pride.

Opposing Hamels will be Mike Fiers, a relatively unknown pitcher who's working through his first full season in the bigs. Fiers has started 13 games this year and holds a 2.63 ERA. He was rocked in his last outing, giving up eight runs in just two innings in Colorado. He'll have a tall task facing the red hot Hamels, but a win would clinch the series for the Brewers.

Phillies Vs. Brewers Recap: Milwaukee Makes It Two Straight With 6-2 Win

The Phillies dropped their second straight game in Milwaukee on Friday night and will now have to take the weekend pair to split the series against the Brewers. After losing on a late-inning grand slam by Corey Hart on Thursday, it was the Phillies offense that went silent on Friday in a 6-2 loss.

Milwaukee put together a four-run rally against Vance Worley in the bottom of the fourth that would prove to be the difference. Worley retired the first two batters of the inning, but things quickly got away from there. A Nyjer Morgan triple to right center scored Corey Hart and Martin Maldonado to give the Brewers the lead for good. Later that inning, Worley failed to retire the pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who added two more with a single to score Morgan and Jean Segura.

On the other side, Gallardo was impressive in shutting down the Phillies' lineup. He allowed just one run through seven innings, a Ryan Howard RBI double. The Phils will try get the third game on Saturday with Cole Hamels on the hill. Hamels is going for his third straight complete game shutout.

Phillies Vs. Brewers: Game Preview, TV Time And More

The Phillies continue their four-game weekend set in Milwaukee on Friday night with Vance Worley on the mound. Both the Phils and Brewers are widely considered out of the playoff race, but that didn't mean Thursday's series opener was drama free. Corey Hart wasted a solid effort from Cliff Lee when he launched a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to erase a one-run Phillies' lead.

The Phils now turn to Worley to try and even things up at Miller Park. Worley pitched into the sixth inning during his last outing, an extra-innings Sunday thriller against St. Louis. He has a sub-4.00 ERA, but can move to .500 on the season with a win on Friday night. Milwaukee will counter with Yovani Gallardo. Schedule and broadcast information below:

Phillies Vs. Brewers Recap: Corey Hart Grand Slam In The 8th Wins It

The Philadelphia Phillies gave one away on Thursday in Milwaukee as the Brewers put together an eighth-inning rally against Josh Lindblom to steal a 7-4 win. The Phils took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth, a margin that starter Cliff Lee would maintain before being removed with two outs in the eighth. Lee started shaky, giving up back-to-back solo homers to Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez in the top of the first. But he would settle in after that, hoping his bullpen could close out the final 1.1 innings.

But it all came apart in the eighth, after Lee retired the first two batters to start the frame. The Brewers loaded up the bases without getting a hit, as Rickie Weeks reached on a Kevin Frandsen error and Lindblom walked both Braun and Ramirez. In stepped Corey Hart, and the lanky right fielder took a 2-2 offering over the right-field wall for a grand slam, instantly making up the one-run deficit and providing a three-run cushion.

Frandsen's error proved costly, as it chased Lee with two outs. The Phils third baseman did have a big night at the plate, however, knocking a double with the bases loaded to score three and give his club the 4-3 lead at the time. That would hold for three innings until everything quickly came undone.

Vance Worley will now take the hill for the second game of the series on Friday, trying to even things up at Miller Park.

Charlie Manuel Upset At Jimmy Rollins

With just a month and a half left in the season, the Phillies will almost certainly spend their September playing for pride. Manager Charlie Manuel, however, will not stand for any lapses in effort. Manuel had a one-on-one meeting with veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins on Thursday after he didn't hustle out a ground ball during Wednesday's blowout loss. As a result of the less than maximum effort, Manuel called Rollins into the clubhouse during the team's batting practice. He kept the discussion private but did pass along the general sentiment to the media, via Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com:

"We have two rules: Hustle and be on time," Manuel said later. "That's all I have to say. This is between Jimmy and me."

[...]

"After talking to him, I think he's ready to play," Manuel said. "He should be running hard from now on. We'll see."

Manuel had considered benching Rollins for Thursday but said the meeting of the minds in the clubhouse was enough at that point.

Rollins said he was upset about something before he started running and mentally checked out, forgetting to aggressively run through the base. He said there was no excuse, and the issue appears to be settled.
