Lepchenko, who became a U.S. citizen in 2007 and lives in Allentown, Pa., defeated Mathilde Johansson in three sets. Lepchenko won the first set 6-3, but Johansson tied the match with a 6-3 win of her own in the second set. Lepchenko was able to win the third set 7-5 to move onto the second round.
The win was Lepchenko's second career U.S. Open victory. She also advanced to the second round of the 2006 tournament. She now holds a career 2-3 record in U.S. Open play. She will move on to face the winner of the match between Anastasia Rodionova and Julia Cohen.
