The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets in the final game of a three-game set on Thursday afternoon by a final score of 3-2.After dropping the first two games of the series, the Phillies and starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick started the game on the wrong foot by allowing two solo-homeruns (Mike Baxter and Scott Hairston) in the first two innings to allow the Mets to jump out to an early lead.
However, Philadelphia's bats quickly responded in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings to allow the team to establish a one-run lead.
From there, Kendrick settled in and earned the win by pitching five scoreless innings after allowing Hairston to homer in the second. He finished the game with a stat line of two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.
Kendrick has now registered a win in his last four starts, going 4-1 in the month of Aug. with one no decision. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 30th save of the year. Jon Niese allowed three earned runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings pitched and was pegged with the loss.

The Philadelphia Phillies fell for the second consecutive night to the New York Mets, losing 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday evening.
In a matchup of young pitchers, Matt Harvey got the best of Tyler Cloyd.
Cloyd pitched well in his major-league debut, giving up only three runs in six innings on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. The 25-year-old was also impressive with a bat in his hands, drawing a pair of walks.
Offensively, the Phillies just couldn't get much going. Juan Pierre was the only man in red with a multi-hit night, collecting two singles. Philly only scored in the first and second innings, with RBIs from Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, respectively.
Harvey kept the bats quiet with an array of pitches. The Connecticut native went 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
Lucas Duda provided the only home run of the game with a two-run blast in the third.

The Philadelphia Phillies released some bad news on Wednesday, announcing that RHP Vance Worley will require a stint on the disabled list.
Worley has had discomfort due to bone chips in his right elbow and is expected to have surgery within the next seven to 10 days, according to The Good Phight.
The 24-year-old has been inconsistent in 2012 after bursting onto the scene with a very solid rookie season in 2011. Overall, he's 6-9 with a 4.03 ERA for the campaign. Worley was told earlier this summer that the pain he was experiencing was due to floating bone chips, but he could still pitch without fear of his condition worsening.
However, with the Phillies out of the race and Worley in need of surgery to clean up the issue, the timing is right for the youngster to shut it down for the year.
Worley is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for 2013 spring training.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that Cole Hamels will not be making his scheduled start on Wednesday night against the New York Mets due to a stomach illness. Instead, right-handed minor league pitching prospect Tyler Cloyd will be recalled from the club's Triple-A affiliate in Lehigh to make his Major League debut.
Cloyd has dominated the minor leagues, registering a 3-0 record with a 1.80 ERA at Double-A Reading before being promoted to Triple-A where he assembled a 12-1 record with a 2.35 ERA.
In fact, the 25-year-old Bellevue, Nebraska native excelled to such an extent that he was named the International League's Most Valuable Pitcher on Tuesday. He is the first Phillies prospect to receive the award since Brandon Duckworth earned the honor in 2001.
Cloyd was also named to the International League's post-season all-star team.

The Philadelphia Phillies were unable to hold two leads Tuesday night against the New York Mets, and a Mets four-run 10th inning was too much to come back from as the Phillies dropped the opener of a three-game set, 9-5.
The Phillies came out strong, as Ryan Howard's first-inning grand slam put the Mets in an early hole after New York scored a run in the opening frame. But that early lead didn't stand, as the Mets slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the score.
The Phillies answered right back in the bottom of the frame on second baseman Chase Utley's solo shot to right field to give the Phillies a one-run lead they would hold until the eighth, when Mets catcher Kelly Shoppach's double scored David Wright to knot the score.
After the game went into extra innings, the Mets plastered Phillies reliever B.J. Rosenberg for four runs in the 10th to put away the game. Utley did collect a single in the bottom of the inning, but the Phillies went quietly against Mets reliever Bobby Parnell, who also collected the win.

Michael Bourn's name has been bandied about for months as the Phillies' potential solution in center field for 2013 and beyond. It seems like a majority of the fan base is behind the idea, too. Personally, I just don't think he's worth the contract he'll demand on the free agent market, and that there's someone else out there who would be a better fit.
