2012 London Olympics: Team USA Holds On To Medal Count Lead, Adding 6 Medals On Friday

Team USA held on to their lead in the 2012 London Olympics medal count, adding six medals and ending the day with 43 total medals. That's one better than China, who added eight for a total of 42. The top five in the medal count are:

  1. United States, 43 (21 gold, 10 silver, 12 bronze)
  2. China, 42 (20, 13, 9)
  3. Russia, 23 (3, 12, 8)
  4. Great Britain, 17 (8, 6, 8)
  5. Japan, 17 (2, 8, 11)
Team USA swimmers continued their success on Friday, adding five of the six medals. Reese Hoffa took the bronze in the men's shotput event to secure the day's only non-swimming medal. The total medal tally from Friday:
  • Michael Phelps, gold, Men's 100m butterfly
  • Missy Franklin, gold, women's 200m backstroke
  • Elizabeth Beisel, bronze, women's 200m backstroke
  • Katie Ledecky, gold, women's 800m freestyle
  • Cullen Jones, silver, Men's 50m freestyle
  • Reese Hoffa, bronze, men's shotput
