Penn State Officials Charged With Perjury To Step Down

The Penn State Board of Trustees have announced tonight that athletic director Tim Curley and Vice President of business and finance Gary Schultz will step down after the two were charged with perjury and failing to report the alleged sex abuse to police.

When Schultz's lawyer hinted that the defense he'd use was that the officials were exempt from the PA law requiring them to report cases of abuse because they had never personally been in contact with the victims... it didn't seem likely that they'd be keeping their jobs.

The chargers all stem from a Grand Jury investigation centered around former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who is alleged to have sexually abused 8 different boys that he met through a children's charity called Second Mile. According to the fact finding of the jury, Sandusky abused several of the boys at the facilities of the Penn State football program. The jury also found that a graduate student witnessed one of the assaults and immediately brought it head coach Joe Paterno, who then alerted AD Tim Curley. The buck seems to have stopped there and Curley did not report the incident to university police.

State Attorney General Linda Kelly was sharp in her criticism of the Penn State administration.

"Despite a powerful eyewitness statement about the sexual assault of a child, this incident was not reported to any law enforcement or child protective agency, as required by Pennsylvania law," Kelly said. "Additionally, there is no indication that anyone from the university ever attempted to learn the identity of the child who was sexually assaulted on their campus or made any follow-up effort to obtain more information from the person who witnessed the attack first-hand."
