The Baylor Bears completed a perfect 40-0 season with an 80-61 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Tuesday night. Brittney Griner scored 17 of her 26 points in the second half, and picked up 13 rebounds and five blocked shots to add Championship Game MVP honors to her already long list of accomplishments.
The Irish managed to stay within seven points at halftime, but Griner and the Bears were simply too strong. Baylor hauled in 45 rebounds to 24 for Notre Dame. That total includes 16 offensive rebounds, representing 55 percent of their missed shots. The Bears shot 50 percent from the floor, compared to 35.5 percent by the Fighting Irish.
Skylar Diggins scored 20 points to lead Notre Dame, but shot just 7-for-17 from the field to get there. Brittany Mallory was the hero in overtime during the NCAA semifinal against UConn, but managed just three points on 1-for-3 shooting. Meanwhile, Natalie Novosel went 0-for-11 from the floor for just five points.
Odyssey Sims was Baylor's second leading scorer, picking up 19 points. Destiny Williams was also efficient from the floor, making 5-of-7 on her way to 12 points and six rebounds. Tuesday belonged to Griner, however. After her performance it's hard to believe that she will really be back next season, but she insists she will play her senior year at Baylor. In which case, anything less than perfection can only be considered a disappointment for the Bears.

The Baylor Bears led by as many as 14 points in the first half, before the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came back to make the score close at halftime. Brittney Griner has nine points and eight rebounds at halftime, but has made just 3-of-7 shooting from the field. The Bears lead the Irish, 34-28, through the first 20 minutes of the game.
Unsurprisingly, Skylar Diggins leads the Irish in scoring with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting in the first half. As a team, Notre Dame is shooting just 34.4 percent from the field, however. Griner has done a tremendous job changing shots in the lane, recording three blocks already. So far, the Bears are dominating the rebounding battle 25 to 15.
Destiny Williams and Odyssey Sims both chipped in eight points to help lead the Bears.

The 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament is down to its last two teams: Baylor and Notre Dame. These two teams which are both No. 1 seeds met in the Preseason NIT with Baylor winning, 94-81. The Irish are the only team left which can prevent Baylor from becoming the first NCAA team to win 40 games in a season.
During its undefeated run to the title game, Baylor knocked out UC Santa Barbara, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Stanford in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bears are 39-0 on the season and are led by junior forward Brittney Griner (23.2 points per game, 9.4 rebounds per game, 5.2 blocks per game)
Notre Dame lost only three times this season, once to Baylor, once to West Virginia and once to UConn (Big East Championship Game). The Irish took out Liberty, California, St. Bonaventure and Maryland in the NCAA Tournament before getting revenge against UConn in the Final Four. Notre Dame is led by junior guard Skylar Diggins (16.8 points per game, 5.8 assists per game).

The 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament Championship Game is officially set, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Baylor Bears winning their Saturday semifinal games to advance. The championship game is set to tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday on ESPN.
The Fighting Irish had to survive a thriller against the Connecticut Huskies to advance. The Huskies were down as many as seven points in the second half, but completed a frantic comeback in the final minutes to force overtime. Then Brittany Mallory took over, scoring seven of her 11 points after regulation to elevate Notre Dame, 83-75, over UConn.
The Bears had an easier time against the Stanford Cardinal, though it's fair to say they looked more fallible than they had at any time during the tournament so far. Brittney Griner went just 3-for-9 shooting from the field matched up against Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Baylor led by just two points at halftime, but Terran Condrey and Odyssey Sims stepped up in the second half to lead the Lady Bears to a 59-47 win.

The Penn State Lady Lions fell, 77-59, to the UConn Huskies in the Sweet 16 of the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament on Sunday at the Ryan Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
A double-digit first half deficit was too much to overcome for Penn State in the second half. The Lady Lions punched back after going down 22-8 early in the game but a late run kept UConn ahead going into the locker room. In the second half, UConn opened on a 10-0 run to end any hope of a comeback. The Huskies kept their shooting percentage above 50% during the half while Penn State struggled from outside the arc and couldn't cut into the lead.
The Lady Lions were led by 19 points by Mia Nickson. Maggie Lucas chipped in 15 points for Penn State. The UConn Huskies were paced by 20 points by Bria Hartley.
The Lady Lions finish the season at 26-7 (13-3 Big Ten). Penn State won the regular season Big Ten crown but fell in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament to Purdue. The Lady Lions defeated UTEP in the First Round of the tournament and LSU in the Second Round before falling to UConn.
The Huskies move on to the Elite Eight to face either the Kentucky Wildcats or Gonzaga Bulldogs.

The Penn State Lady Lions trail the UConn Huskies, 43-29, after the first half in the Sweet 16 of the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament from the Ryan Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Despite not shooting well in the first half, Penn State was able to keep the game close until the final few minutes of the half by using their advantage in free throw attempts. Penn State made 7-9 in the first half while UConn was 2-2 before hitting two late free throws to get to 4-4. The Huskies used another run to close out the first half with a double-digit lead.
The Lady Lions were led by 9 points apiece by Alex Bentley and Mia Nickson in the first half. UConn was led by Bria Hartley with 11 points in the first half.

The 3-seed Delaware Blue Hens appeared to be headed to the Sweet 16 through the first 20 minutes of Tuesday night's second round 2012 NCAA Women's Tournament game against the Kansas Jayhawks, taking a six-point lead into halftime. They had no answer for Angel Goodrich, however, who scored 16 of her 27 points in the second half to lead the Jayhawks to a 70-64 win.
Elena Delle Donne was once again magnificent for the Blue Hens, scoring 34 points and adding 10 rebounds in a losing effort. Though she shot 9-for-18 from the field, her teammates shot just 12-for-38 from the floor, or 31.6 percent, for the game. Donne did struggle for long range, making just 1-of-5 3-point attempt in a 2-for-14 team effort.
Meanwhile, the Jayhawks made 50 percent of their shots from the floor, and 6-of-16 from beyond the arc to overcome a 40-30 rebounding advantage for the Blue Hens. Also chipping a solid effort from Kansas was Aishah Sutherland, with 12 points and a game-leading 11 rebounds.
With the win, the Jayhawks advance to the Sweet 16 to face the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.
