Video: Daniel Briere "Shocked" By Suspension

Flyers forward Daniel Briere reacts to be suspended for a hit that he says didn't even connect. He has also has some interesting thoughts on other, much worse hits that have injured players recently that were treated less harshly than his. Briere also claims that the NHL wasn't even interested in hearing his explanation or defense. He noted how the other player threatened him before the faceoff and had punched him on the previous play so he was just trying to protect himself, but did take responsibility for having his stick up.

He was asked whether he thought the extra time he got was so he would miss the Islanders game this Sunday? I got a kick out of his response.

What am I going to do? Go fight their whole team? I've had like two or three fights in my career. It's not like I'm going to do anything physical if I play against the Islanders if that's what their thinking.

Danny Briere Suspended Three Games For Stick Swing Incident

The NHL has suspended Flyers forward Danny Briere three games after he swung his stick at the Islanders Franz Nielson last Friday night. You can see video of the incident in this stream. This is not Briere’s first run in with the NHL law, which according to CSN’s Tim Pannacio is a reason for the length of his suspension.

The incident didn’t deserve three games, but that is the price a player pays for being a repeat offender.

Perhaps not coincidently, Briere will miss next Sunday’s rematch with the Islanders. The threat of possible retaliation could have played into the NHL’s decision. Briere explained the incident after the game.

[Nielsen] was mad because we were two on Gillies in front of the net a few faceoffs before and all I was trying to do was hold his arm because he was trying to hit Coburn, and obviously, we didn’t want anybody fighting Gillies. We wanted to leave him on the ice. So all I was trying to do was hold his arm to protect Coburn a bit. [On the faceoff with 1:02 left] Nielsen called me a few expletive words and didn’t appreciate that I was doing that and the faceoff before he did the same thing to me. He came over with his stick, had me in a head lock. So I didn’t know what he was doing. I just wanted to keep my hands high and try to protect myself.

To replace Briere, the Flyers have called up 21-year-old Eric Wellwood from the Phantoms.

Philadelphia Flyers Crush New York Islanders 6-1

Jeff Carter and Chris Pronger both scored two goals as the Philadelphia Flyers crushed the New York Islanders 6-1. Rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was superb yet again making 31 saves and giving up just one goal, which came on a second period penalty shot when the Flyers were already up four goals. The Flyers would restore their four goal lead nearly 30 seconds after the penalty shot with Chris Pronger’s second.

Kimmo Timmonen also had a nice night with three points coming from a goal two assists. Dan Carcillo fought Zenon Konopka twice and earned himself 22 penalty minutes tonight.

This marks the Islanders eleventh straight loss in Philadelphia. They haven’t won here since 2007 and have won just one of their sixteen contests with the Flyers. That’s complete and total ownership… The Flyers have now won three straight and are off until Monday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes. On Thursday, the rival New York Rangers come to town.
