Flyers Trade Mike Richards And Jeff Carter In Separate Deals

In what has to be considered one of the most shocking days in recent Flyers history, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards have both been shipped out of Philadelphia with the news breaking within minutes of one another. While the reactions and fallout from this move will be heard for months, let's first just go over the deals.

Jeff Carter has been sent to Columbus for forward Jakub Voracek, the eighth overall draft pick in Friday night's draft and a third-round draft pick. Voracek, 21, was the 7th overall pick in the draft three years ago and a former Quebec major junior league player of the year.

Mike Richards was sent to Los Angeles for forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds. Schenn is a very highly regarded 19 year old that was the Kings' first round pick in 2009.

Obviously this is a franchise changing type of deal. The Flyers have traded away two of their top five players and faces of their franchise, one of which was their captain. It certainly makes you wonder whether there is more to this story. If there is, the Flyers certainly moved so quickly that the deals were done before anyone knew.

The main takeaway here is that the Flyers have gotten younger and much cheaper. They've absolutely got the room to play Ilya Bryzgalov now and this could very well change their position in regards to Ville Leino.
