Sergei Bobrovsky pitched a shutout through two periods for the Philadelphia Flyers before Kyle Okposo got the New York Islanders on the scoreboard early in the third. By then, the Flyers had already established a 2-0 lead and firm control of the game despite being significantly outshot.
The Islanders enjoyed a 35-22 advantage on shots on goal, but Bobrovsky simply could not be beat for the first two periods of the game. He stuffed Michael Grabner on a penalty shot just 2:49 into the first period for perhaps the biggest plays of the game.
Scott Hartnell put the Flyers on the board first with a powerplay goal late in the first period off of a pass from Jaromir Jagr. Wayne Simmonds put the Flyers up 2-0 in the second for his 11th goal of the season. Sean Couturier registered what would technically be the game winner at the 18:30 mark in the third period to put the Flyers up 3-1. John Tavares scored with 17 seconds left in the game for the Islanders to make the score more respectable.
