Phillies Vs. Cubs Final Score: Polanco Hits Game-Winning 2-Run Double In 8th Inning

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 on Monday night on the strength of a Placido Polanco two-run double in the eight inning to score Juan Pierre and Jimmy Rollins. Vance Worley pitched seven quality innings on the mound, giving up just five hits and one earned run.

The Phillies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Hunter Pence, Carlos Ruiz and Pete Orr all batted in runs off singles. Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad gave up five hits in the inning, but settled down to give up just three over the next five scoreless innings.

Antonio Bastardo replaced Worley in the eighth inning and gave up a walk before yielding to Chad Qualls. Qualls promptly gave up three runs on the first two batters he faced. Starlin Castro hit a single to score Tony Campana, then Bryan LaHair hit a two-shot home run to tie the game at four runs apiece.

In the eighth inning, Pierre reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Rollins hit a single to put two men on. Polanco's went to deep left off of Rafael Dolis to put the Phillies up for good.

Phillies Vs. Cubs Score: Cubs Beat Phillies 5-1 Behind Strong Outing From Matt Garza

Matt Garza gave up only one hit through seven innings, striking out ten on the way to giving the Cubs their second victory of this four game series. Jimmy Rollins managed a single in the first, and combined with an infield single from Hunter Pence in the ninth that was all the offense Philadelphia could muster. Their only run was a gift from Cubs closer Carlos Marmol when he walked two, gave up the single to Pence, and then walked in a run before getting Shane Victorino on a ground out to end the game.

Starlin Castro, Jeff Baker, Ian Stewart and Joe Mather produced for the Cubs, with Castro picking up two RBI, one in the third and one in the eigth, and Mather's solo home run in the fourth only his second home run in four seasons.

The Phillies have one more game against the Cubs, Monday at 7:05pm, and they'll look to Vance Worley to take the mound and help them even out the series.

Phillies Vs. Cubs Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Philadelphia Phillies play the Chicago Cubs in an afternoon rubber match-up after winning Saturday's game, 3-2. Should they take the series, the Phillies will guarantee at least a split in the series before Monday's finale.

Kyle Kendrick (0-1, 9.39 RA) continues to fill in for the injured Cliff Lee, making his second start as a member of the rotation. He'll hope this time goes better than his first one, when he allowed seven runs in three-plus innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Before that, Kendrick has allowed two runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings as a reliever.

Matt Garza (1-1, 3..38 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Cubs in just his second road start of the season. The Miami Marlins torched him for six runs over five innings in what turned into a 9-1 loss. He rebounded with a seven solid innings of two-run ball in his last outing, but he wound up taking the no-decision in the Cubs' 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Phillies Vs. Cubs, Game 2: Philadelphia Wins, 5-2

The Philadelphia Phillies backed up strong pitching from Joe Blanton and the Philadelphia bullpen with plenty of offense, beating the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the second game of a four game series.

Blanton pitched 7.1 innings for the Phillies, giving up eight hits but only two runs, striking out eight while walking none. Chad Qualls picked up two outs in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon earned his seventh save of the year, striking out two in the ninth.

Philadelphia's offense came mostly in the fourth, with Carlos Ruiz and Jimmy Rollins each picking up a pair of runs batted in. Ruiz added to his totals with a solo home run in the sixth, giving the Phillies more than enough to cover the Cubs' two runs. Byran LaHair and Starlin Castro picked up the RBI for the Cubs.

The next game in the series takes place Sunday at 1:35pm and the expected matchup is Kyle Kendrick vs. Matt Garza.
