The Phillies and Pirates were locked in a pitchers duel through six innings in their opening day matchup, until the Phils offense finally broke through the in the top of the 7th. Ty Wigginton and John Mayberry both got on base, setting up Carlos Ruiz, who already had two hits on the day, to knock in the first run with a sac fly to right.

Phils' starter Roy Halladay has been dealing so far allowing just two hits over six innings and striking out three. Buc's starter Erik Bedard allowed six hits over the first 7 frames, but just the one run.

Rookie second baseman Freddy Galvis has done little to quell the fears about his offensive ineptitude this afternoon. He earned the dubious distinction of becoming just the 3rd major leaguer since 1947 to ground into double plays in his first two career at bats. In the seventh, he grounded out again to end a rally.
