Phillies Vs Padres Final Score: Cole Hamels Goes 7 Innings In Return From Suspension In 3-2 Win

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-2, on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. With the win, the Phillies took the series, 2-1.

The Phillies struck early and put a run across in both the first and second innings on Sunday. Jimmy Rollins hit a solo homer in the first inning and Brian Schneider picked up an RBI single in the second inning. The Padres got one run back in the third inning. Juan Pierre drove in what would turn out to be the winning run on a double in the fifth inning. San Diego got their other run in the eighth inning.

Cole Hamels went seven innings in the win for the Phillies. He struck out five and walked three batters while allowing only one earned run. Hamels is now 5-1 on the year for Philadelphia. Jose Contreras and Antonio Bastardo shared the hold in the eighth inning. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 10th save of the season. Jeff Suppan went six innings in the loss for the Padres. He gave up all three runs but only earned two of the runs.

Phillies Vs Padres: Phils Go For Series Win In Matinee

Starting pitcher Cole Hamels will make his return to the Philadelphia rotation Sunday, when the Phillies host the San Diego Padres (1:35 p.m. ET on PHL 17) in the series finale of a three-game set at Citizen Bank Park. Hamels will be making his first start since being suspended five games because of his admitted intentional plunking of Washington Nationals outfield Bryce Harper earlier in the week.

Hamels (3-1, 2.45 ERA) will oppose Jeff Supan (2-0, 0.90 ERA), who will try and help the Padres (12-22) earn its first season series victory over Philly since 2006.

On Saturday, San Diego held Philadelphia's offense in-check in a 2-1 victory, while on Friday the Phillies won 7-3.

Phillies Vs Padres Recap: Padres Defeat Phillies 2-1 Despite 7 Strong Innings From Halladay

The San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on Saturday night, behind a strong pitching performance from Edinson Volquez and a timely pinch hit from Jesus Guzman. Guzman popped out in right field foul territory, but it was deep enough for Cameron Maybin to score from third. Volquez gave up six hits but only one run through six innings.

Roy Halladay gave up two runs and seven hits over seven innings of work. He is now winless in his five previous starts, despite striking out 10 on Saturday. The offensive support simply wasn't there for Halladay, as aside from one run in the third the Phillies had trouble turning hits into runs. They left twelve men on base, and were 1-10 with runners in scoring position.

The Phillies have now split the first two games of their three game series versus the Padres. The deciding game will be played Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch at 1:35pm EST.

Padres Vs. Phillies Preview: Roy Halladay Looking For First Win Since April 16

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to put back-to-back wins together, and finally get ace pitcher Roy Halladay some run support for him to pick up his first win in nearly a month as he faces off against the San Diego Padres Saturday night.

The Phillies offense has scored three or less runs in four of Halladay's seven starts. Padres starter Edinson Volquez has also suffered from a lack of offense in his starts, as San Diego has scored more than three runs in only one of his starts in 2012.

Philadelphia showed signs of breaking out of their funk by taking the first game of the series Friday night, 7-3 behind a strong pitching performance by Vance Worley and timely offense. The Phillies will look to continue to keep the bats hot Saturday night against Volquez in order to help Halladay break his longest winless streak since joining the Phillies.

First pitch at Citizens Bank Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be televised locally on CSN.

Scott Podsednik Traded To Boston Red Sox From Philadelphia Phillies Organization

The Philadelphia Phillies announced they have traded Scott Podsednik to the Boston Red Sox Friday in exchange for cash considerations.

Podsednik, 36, played 22 games for Philadelphia's Triple-A affiliate, Lehigh Valley, batting .203 with four RBI and six stolen bases.

An outfielder with all kinds of speed, Podsednik led the National League with 70 stolen bases while with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004. He was named an All-Star the following season with the Chicago White Sox, but hasn't appeared in the majors since 2010.

The Red Sox have been thin in the outfield since Carl Crawford had offseason surgery and Jacoby Ellsbury likewise landed on the disabled list during the first month of the season.

Phillies Vs. Padres Score: Phillies Beat Padres 7-3, Start Series Off Right

After being swept by the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies were able to move on and show a little flash in beating the San Diego Padres 7-3 Friday night. The offensive struggles faded, at least for one night. With Ryan Howard and Chase Utley both on the disabled list, Philadelphia has had trouble backing up their pitchers with any offensive support. Carlos Ruiz led the way in making sure that wasn't the case, going 3-3 with a walk and collecting 3 RBI on two singles and a home run. John Mayberry had a home run and three RBI of his own, and Freddy Galvis picked up the remaining run on a double to deep left in the bottom of the sixth.

Clayton Hill's losing streak now stretches to five starts, and the Padres offense isn't doing their pitching staff any favors either. The Padres were able to score two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth, but Philadelphia's Vance Worley kept things in check, striking out nine over six innings. Antonio Bastardo pitched two hitless innings, and Chad Qualls closed things out. The Phillies host two more games against the Padres, with Saturday's game taking place at 7:05pm.

Laynce Nix Injury: Phillies Place Nix On 15-Day DL, Call Up Three Players

The Philadelphia Phillies put first baseman/outfielder Laynce Nix on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with a calf strain. The Phillies also called up three players from Triple-A Lehigh Valley: Jake Diekman, Raul Valdes and Hector Luna (via CSN Philly).

Nix had played in 22 games this season for Philadelphia and was hitting .326 with 2 homers and 11 RBI. Diekman and Valdes are both left-handed relievers while Luna is an infielder who has also played in left field. Of the trio, only Diekman is making his first trip up to the major leagues. He said about the call-up:

"It's surreal," he said standing in the Phillies' clubhouse Friday afternoon. "Two years ago I didn't think this would happen. I don't know if I'll feel anything the first time I run in from the bullpen."

To make room on the roster for the players who were called up, the Phillies sent pitcher Brian Sanches to Triple-A and moved pitcher Justin De Fratus to the 60-day disabled list.
