Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay is reportedly out six to eight weeks with a strained lat muscle (via Ken Rosenthal's Twitter). Halladay was scheduled to meet with doctors to have his shoulder examined on Tuesday.
Halladay was pulled from his last start on Sunday after completing just two innings. The shoulder soreness that was reported by the team was not a new injury for Halladay but was a lingering issue.
Halladay is 4-5 during the 2012 season with a 3.98 ERA. He has lost three of his last four starts. Halladay surrendered five home runs in his last three starts after giving up only one in his first eight starts.
With Halladay on the shelf for such a long stretch, the Phillies might have to make a roster move. Roy Oswalt, a former Phillie and free agent is reportedly off the market to the Rangers (via Dallas News).

Watching Roy Halladay leave his start early on Sunday had Philadelphia Phillies fans wondering what could be wrong with their ace, but those on the coaching staff knew exactly what was going on, according to CSNPhilly.com.
Pitching coach Rich Dubee says Halladay's shoulder has been an issue before.
"Yeah, it's been an issue," Dubee said. "It's been there. It's been lingering. Some days it's better than others. Chicago [May 17] was better than others. Even the start of last game it was better and then got it cranky. Today, warming up, he felt fine, but as he got into the game and sat down and even before the first inning, it was just hard to get it going again."
It has yet to be determined if Halladay will get an MRI on his shoulder. Halladay leads the National League in batters faced this season.

The Philadelphia Phillies were defeated, 8-3, by the St. Louis Cardinals on a hot Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Despite the loss, the Phillies won the series, 3-1.
The Phillies got off to a rough start in the heat when starting pitcher Roy Halladay was knocked out of the game after just two innings. Halladay was removed for right shoulder soreness. Halladay gave up a grand slam in the first inning to Yadier Molina. Molina left the game in the fifth inning due to dehydration. Halladay had one walk and no strikeouts in the two innings of work.
Juan Pierre cut into the Cardinals lead with an RBI single in the third inning. Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer off of Chad Qualls in the fifth inning to push the lead to 7-1. Matt Adams hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-1. Pierre scored a run in the eighth and drove in another in the ninth but an epic comeback was not in the offing for Philadelphia.
Adam Wainwright picked up the win for the Cardinals after going six innings and allowing only one earned run. Halladay picked up his fifth loss.
The Phillies next series begins May 28 in New York against the Mets at Citi Field.

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay left Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the third inning with right shoulder soreness (via CSN Philly).
Halladay had given up four runs (all earned) on a one home run during the first two innings. He also walked one batter and did not record a strikeout. The Phillies said that Halladay was pulled as a precaution. The temperature during the game was in the mid-90s which might have impacted Halladay but certainly took its toll on one of his foes.
St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina hit a grand slam off of Halladay in the first inning but left the game in the fifth inning due to dehydration.

Kyle Kendrick pictched a complete game shutout for the Philadelphia Phillies as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Saturday night. Kendrick gave up seven hits but no runs, striking out four and walking none as he threw 94 pitches, 70 for strikes.
Philadelphia's offense struck in the fourth, when Hunter Pence led off with a single and scored on a double from Shane Victorino. They added three in the sixth when John Mayberry Jr. picked up two RBI on a double and Freddy Galvis got one on a ground out to shortstop. That was all the offense would get, but it was more than they needed behind Kendrick's performance.
With the win Philadelphia has taken the first three games of the series. They face St. Louis in the final game of the series tomorrow at 2:15pm EDT.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 Friday night, winning the game in the top of the 10th. Cliff Lee was denied his first win of the season but he did manage to avoid an 0-3 record, exiting the game after the 7th with the score tied 3-3.
Philadelphia scored first, getting two runs in the top of the second inning from an RBI single from Jimmy Rollins and with Freddy Galvis scoring after an error by Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams. St. Louis answered back with one run in the bottom of the second on a Shane Robinson RBI double. They added two more in the third and fourth with a Rafael Furcal solo home run and an RBI single by Yadier Molina. That left the Phillies trailing until the top of the seventh, when Juan Pierre picked up an RBI with a double to deep center.
Things were tied at 3 until the top of the tenth, when Juan Pierre led off with a single and Hunter Pence followed him with a home run. With Phildelphia's on top 5-3. Jonathan Papelbon took the hill for Phildelphia. He retired the side in order, getting Carlos Beltran on a fly out to left, struck out David Freese, and retired Yadier Molina on a groundout to third.
With the win the Phillies move above .500 to 24-23 and leads 2-0 in the four game series with the Cardinals. Game three is scheduled for 7:15pm Saturday.

Cliff Lee looks for his first win of the season, again, as the Philadelphia Phillies visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. (Game time: 8:15 p.m. ET, TV Schedule: CSN Philly)
Lee (0-2) has not pitched poorly this season, compiling a stellar 2.66 ERA, but the Phillies have scored just nine runs in the six games Lee has started.
Philadelphia had more runs than that against the Cardinals last night, coming alive for 18 hits in a 10-9 series-opening win.
Lee will be opposed by Kyle Lohse (5-1, 2.91 ERA).

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman, Chase Utley, recently took two sessions of batting practice – before the Phillies game against the Cardinals – but still experiences some knee pain in the field.
Utley's BP sessions may have been encouraging, but his work in the field was limited and that's the part of the game that causes the second baseman's creaky left knee the most pain.
The 33-year-old has been banged up the last few seasons and clearly on the downside of his career. In 454 at bats in 2011, Utley hit a career-low 11 home runs and drove in only 44 runs batted in. His .259 batting average was also the lowest output of his career.
Even at less than 100 percent, Utley's eventual return to the Phillies lineup should provide a much-needed boost to the last place Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-9, on Thursday night in Game 1 of their four-game series at Busch Stadium. Joe Blanton (4-4) struggled struggled mightily, yet again, giving 10 hits (two homers) and seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. He has a 13.50 ERA over his last two starts after starting the season with a 2.81 ERA over seven starts. Thankfully, Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook (4-3) was arguably worse.
The Phillies took a 6-0 lead after just two innings capped by a two-run double by Shane Victorino in the top of the second. By the time Westbrook left with one out to go in the fourth, he had given up eight hits and walked three batters. The Cards responded with four runs in the third inning. Blanton gave up three more runs in the fifth inning off home runs by Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina. Placido Polanco had hit an RBI-single in the top of the inning, making the score 7-7 after five.
Freddy Galvis batted in his third RBI of the night on a single in the sixth inning, and Mike Fontenot pinch-hit another to put the Phillies up 9-7 after six. David Freese homered off Chad Qualls to put the Cards back within one run after seven. Thankfully, a Ty Wigginton solo shot in the eighth (his third home run of the season) would prove to be the game-winner.
Skip Schumaker batted in one run on sac fly off Antonio Bastardo in the eighth inning to make the score 10-9, but Jonathan Papelbon gave up just one hit in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the year. Raul Valdes was given the win, his first on the year, for getting the Phillies out of the fifth after Blanton gave up two homers with just one out. Fernando Salas gave up four hits and two earned runs in the sixth to earn the loss.
Game 2 of the series will take place Friday at 8:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium. Cliff Lee (0-2, 2.66 ERA) will go up against the Cardinals' Kyle Lohse (5-1, 2.91) at the mound.
