Phillies Vs. Mets: Cole Hamels' Arm, Ty Wigginton's Bat Power Philadelphia's 8-4 Win

The Philadelphia Phillies topped the New York Mets, 8-4, on Monday at Citi Field in the first game of a three-game set.

For both teams, the majority of offense came via the longball. Ty Wigginton had six RBI to lead the Phillies. Wigginton hit an RBI single, a two-RBI double and a three-run homer. For the Mets, Vinny Rottino and Scott Hairston each hit a two-run home run. The Phillies led 2-0 after the third inning on Wigginton's double. The Mets answered back in the fifth inning with Rottino's homer. Philadelphia gained the lead back in the sixth inning on a John Mayberry two-run shot. Hairston's homer tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Wigginton's single gave the Phillies the lead for good in the seventh inning and he put the game away with a three-run shot in the ninth inning.

Cole Hamels got the start for the Phillies. He went eight innings in the win, giving up four earned runs and striking out six batters. Jon Niese was the starter for the Mets and gave up four runs in five innings. Bobby Parnell took the loss for the Mets for giving up the run in the seventh inning. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Phillies and struck out one batter.
