Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Game 4: Philadelphia Swept With 8-3 Loss On Thursday

The Philadelphia Phillies were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-3, on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park. With the loss, the Phillies were swept by the Dodgers in four games in Philadelphia for the first time in franchise history.

The Phillies got all three of their runs in the third inning. Pitcher Cole Hamels got the first run of the game when he scored when Hunter Pence hit into a fielder's choice. A sacrifice fly by Ty Wigginton put another run across and Mike Fontenot hit an RBI single to cap the scoring. The Dodgers got their first run in the top of the fourth inning on a Jerry Hairston Jr. sacrifice fly. Then in the sixth inning, L.A. took the lead with three runs. James Loney, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Matt Treanor each hit RBI singles. In the ninth inning, the Dodgers put the game away against Chad Qualls. Treanor would score on a fielder's choice. Andre Ethier hit a two-run double and Hairston got a single which drove Ethier in. Qualls only got one out in the ninth inning while allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Hamels, who was 6-0 in his career against Los Angeles, got the start for the Phillies but was unable to prevent another loss for Philadelphia. Hamels lasted six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out six batters and walking one in the loss. Aaron Harang got his 100th career victory in the start for the Dodgers. Harang went six innings, giving up eight hits and three runs, all earned.

The Phillies dropped to 0-23 on the season when trailing after the seventh inning.

Freddy Galvis Injury: Phillies Place 2B On The 15-Day Disabled List

Injuries just keep piling up for the Philadelphia Philies. The latest is second baseman Freddy Galvis who was added to the 15-day disabled list on Thursday morning. Galvis is dealing with a lower back strain, according to the team.

To fill the hole in the lineup, Philadelphia will be adding infielder/outfielder Michael Martinez, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Martinez, 28, played in 88 games for the Phillies last year, hitting .196/.258/.282.

Galvis was hitting .256/.254/.363 in 58 games with the Phillies. He is in the lineup in place of the injured Chase Utley, who is dealing with a knee injury. Utley is currently rehabbing in extended spring training. No timetable has been established for his return to the big league club.

Besides Utley and Galvis, Philadelphia's disabled list includes Roy Halladay and Ryan Howard.

The Phillies are in last place in the National League East, and riding a five-game losing skid. They are six games out of first place.

Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Game 4: Can Cole Hamels Stop The Skid?

The Philadelphia Phillies are mired in a five-game losing streak, their longest of the season. Perhaps more shocking is their place in the standings. After five straight trips to the playoffs, the Phillies are more than two months into the season sitting two games under .500 and six games back from what most assumed to be their rightful place atop the National League East. Tasked with starting a turnaround is Cole Hamels (8-2, 2.81 ERA).

The left-handed pitcher's last outing started the skid. He gave up five earned runs in six and two-thirds innings in a loss to the Miami Marlins, only his second loss of the season. Hamels has allowed 14 hits, nine earned runs, and four homer runs in his last two starts. The Los Angeles Dodgers, playing without Matt Kemp, could be just what Hamels needs. In five career starts against L.A., the lefty is 3-0 with a 1.18 ERA.

Aaron Harang is on the hill for the Dodgers. The right-hander is 4-3 with a 3.90 ERA this season. He won his last start, and has allowed only two earned runs in his last two starts.

The game starts at 1:05 p.m. Fans who cannot make it out to Citizens Bank Ballpark can catch the game on Comcast Sports and the MLB Network.

Phillies Vs. Dodgers Final Score: 6-5 Loss Makes It 5 Straight For Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies did not catch a break on Wednesday night with Matt Kemp out of the lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Philadelphia lost 6-5 on Wednesday night, and the skid continues with their fifth straight loss.

Kyle Kendrick picked up his fifth loss of the season when he came apart in the sixth inning. The right-hander walked in a run before giving up a two-run single to Dee Gordon that gave the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. Kendrick struck out six and walked five in the effort.

Ty Wigginton doubled in a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short. The Phillies have one more left against the Dodgers on Thursday afternoon before starting a series against the Orioles. Cole Hamels gets the ball for that game.

Roy Halladay Injury Update: Phillies Pitcher Talks About Shoulder Injury, Finishing Career In Philadelphia

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay talked about his shoulder injury in a press conference on Wednesday (via Phollowing The Phillies).

After consulting with doctors, Halladay said he will take a three-week break from throwing the baseball. In terms of future surgery, Halladay seemed doubtful. "From what I understand, no. It's a matter of calming it down and strengthening everything around it. I think from what they saw, the changes weren't such that would warrant anything down the road. From my understanding, I was never asked to see him at a later point. Once we calmed it down and got things comfortable, it wouldn't be something we'd have to evaluate later."

While Halladay misses being in the game, he is taking care not to rush back and risk re-injury. "I think there's ways to work hard and be smart about it and rehab yourself correctly. The first week was obviously tough, but I found things to do, not arm related. The important thing is just knowing that a week could save me a month. As much as I want to be back, I want to make sure that when I am back, it's not something I have to address later on, that it's a hurdle that's been passed and doesn't need to be something that reoccurs down the road. I understand that and I'm going to be very cautious of that. At the same token, I want to be out there. I'm going to do everything I can to rehab and all the other stuff to make sure we're doing it the right way. That's I think a part of the reason I wanted to get the second opinion is you just want to try to gather as much information as you can so you know what you're dealing with and you know how to approach it the right way and what makes the most sense and ultimately what's best in the long term. And I'm very well aware that a week during this process could save me a long period of time. I'll be very upfront with them and use the knowledge around me."

Halladay also spoke about his future. He wants to end his career with the Phillies and win a World Series before he does. "Ultimately, my goal is to finish my career with the Phillies and win a World Series here. Some of those things are not fully in my control, but my intent is to play here and finish my career here and be here as long as I can. I don't know what's going to happen over the next year and a half, but I know from my side I'm going to make an effort to be here as long as I can and finish here. I don't want to go anywhere else."

Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Game 3: Kyle Kendrick Tries To Pick Up His Third Straight Victory On Wednesday

The Philadelphia Phillies host the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of their series on Wednesday night.

Starting Pitchers

The Phillies will have Kyle Kendrick (2-4, 4.02 ERA) on the mound while the Dodgers will counter with Chris Capuano (7-2, 2.50 ERA). Kendrick started the season 0-4 but has won his last two starts. In those two outings, Kendrick has allowed only two earned runs while striking out eight batters and walking three. Capuano is trending in the opposite direction. After beginning the season a surprising 5-0, he is just 2-2 over his last four starts. He enters the game coming off his worst start of the season in which he gave up seven hits, seven runs (four earned), four walks and only struck out three batters in a 13-3 loss to the Rockies. Capuano is 0-2 all-time against Philadelphia. Kendrick is 4-3 against the Dodgers in his career.

Player to Watch

Dodgers: Elian Herrera. Before this season, Herrera had been in the minors since 2006. With Matt Kemp out, Herrera has made the most of his opportunity to play. In 20 games, Herrera is batting .304 with two stolen bases, five doubles, eight walks and nine RBI. In the current series, Herrera is 2-8 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a stolen base.

Phillies: Juan Pierre. Pierre is just one run away from 1,000 in his career. He has scored 19 runs in 49 games for the Phillies in 2012. Pierre has eight hits and three runs scored in his last 17 at-bats. He was 0-4 at the plate yesterday.

Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Game 2 Final Score: Cliff Lee Fans 12, But Philadelphia Loses 2-1

Cliff Lee (0-3) struck out 12 in 7 2/3 innings of work, but Philadelphia simply couldn't find any offense in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of their four-game series at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night. Lee still has yet to earn his first win of the season despite a 2.92 ERA.

Lee had a shutout going until the eighth inning. With two outs and Bobby Abreu and Tony Gwynn on base, Elian Herrera hit a two-RBI double to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead on their first runs of the night. Lee retired 10 straight batters from the second to the fifth inning. His arm tired late, however. Four of the six hits he gave up came in the eighth.

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead off a Hunter Pence single to left to score Jimmy Rollins. Otherwise, they didn't have much success against Dodgers' starter Chad Billingsley (3-4). Billingsley gave up six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in seven innings. Kenley Jansen earned his eighth save of the season.

Game 3 of the series is set for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. Kyle Kendrick (2-4, 4.02 ERA) will try to stem the Phillies' four-game losing streak against the Dodgers' Chris Capuano (7-2, 2.50) at the mound.

Vance Worley Injury: Phillies Pitcher Feels No Pain In Big League Return

Not much good comes out of collecting a third straight loss, however, the Philadelphia Phillies were able to send starting pitcher Vance Worley to the mound Monday for the first time in 24 days. The overall result was a 4-3 loss, but Worley was able to toss 80 pitches in four innings and suffer no-ill effects in the outing.

"No tightness or anything," Worley said.

Worley, who will be pitching with a bone chip in his elbow for the remainder of the season, was a bit erratic in the first inning but bounced-back nicely and was able to last longer than his 75-pitch count placed on him.

"It's nice knowing that there's nothing in there that's going to bother me," Worley said. "I've just got to go out there and pitch."

The Phillies and Dodgers continue their four-game series Tuesday (7:05 p.m. ET on Comcast Sports Network), while Worley is expected to return to the five-man rotation.

Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Game 2: Cliff Lee Searches (Still) For First Win Of Season

What would be more surprising than the Philadelphia Phillies at the .500 and in the basement of the National League East Division standings in early June? How about their left-handed ace Cliff Lee still searching for his first win of the season despite having an ERA of 3.00?

Lee (0-2) will try to snap that streak Tuesday (7:05 p.m. ET on Comcast Sports Network) against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the four at Citizen Bank Park. The lefty will oppose LA's Chad Billingsley (2-4, 4.09 ERA), who's winless in his last nine starts.

The Phillies (28-28) are losers of three straight and are in last place of the NL East Division standings. The good news is, the Phils are just four games back of the first-place Washington Nationals.

Phillies Vs. Dodgers, Final Score: Philadelphia Opens Series With 4-3 Loss

The Philadelphia Phillies opened their four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park with a 4-3 loss Monday night. Jonathan Papelbon (0-2) earned the loss after giving up an RBI single to Elian Herrera in the ninth inning that scored Dee Gordon to put the Dodgers ahead for good. Gordon reached on a triple in the previous at-bat.

Vance Worley started for the Phillies, and gave up three earned runs off five hits and three walks while striking out four in four innings of work. The Dodger took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Gordon batted in a run on an infield single to shortstop to score Adam Kennedy during the second.

The Phillies tied things up in the third inning. Freddy Galvis scored John Mayberry Jr. on a single to right. Placido Polanco then hit a two-run home run--his second of the year--three batters later to send Galvis and himself around home. Clayton Kershaw started seven innings for the Dodgers. He gave up eight hits and struck out five. Kenley Jansen earned his seventh save of the season with a two-strikeout ninth inning.

Game 2 of the series will be played at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Cliff Lee (0-2, 3.00 ERA) will battle the Dodgers' Chad Billingsley (2-4, 4.09) on the mound.
