2012 MLB Draft: John Sickels On Phillies Top Picks

The Phillies did not have a first round pick in this years' 2012 MLB draft, but they did have 2 picks in the "sandwich" or compensation round between the first and second. With those picks they two took a pair of right handed high school pitchers. Here's what our resident prospect expert John Sickels had to say about them.

↵

40) Philadelphia Phillies: Shane Watson, RHP, Lakewood HS, Lakewood, CA: Watson is another impressive high school right-hander, generating 90-94 MPH heat along with a strong curve and a cutter. Like most preps, his changeup needs work and he needs to get more consistent in general, but he has ideal size at 6-4, 200. He is committed to baseball at Southern Cal.

↵

54) Philadelphia Phillies: Mitch Gueller, RHP, West HS, Chehalis, Washington: A late riser on draft boards, Gueller is a 6-3, 205 pounder with a 92-96 MPH fastball and a promising curve. He’s very athletic and still somewhat raw as a pitcher, but his stock rose once scouts realized he was signable away from his college commitment at Washington State.
