Phillies-Nationals Final Score: Washington Blanks Phillies 3-0

The Philadelphia Phillies came into Thursday night with a chance to sweep the NL East-leading Washington Nationals. However they couldn't get it done, losing in the nation's capital 3-0.

The Phillies couldn't get anything going against Ross Detwiler, who threw seven innings of shutout ball. Detwiler allowed only three hits and two walks throughout his outing, keeping Philadelphia off-balance the entire evening.

Cole Hamels was solid in his own right, but ended up being saddled with his sixth loss of the season. The southpaw also went seven innings while surrendering three runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Adam LaRoche did most of the damage against Hamels, hitting a solo home run in the second as part of his 3-for-4 game. The first baseman also scored a run while driving in two.

Even with the loss, the Phillies took the series in Washington and will now head home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game set starting Friday night.

Phillies Vs. Nationals: Can Philadelphia Make It A Sweep?

The Philadelphia Phillies have brooms on the brain as they take on the Washington Nationals on Thursday night with a chance to sweep their NL East rivals. Washington has not been swept in six weeks and has yet to lose a series to the Phillies this season.

Cole Hamels gets the call for Philadelphia. Atlanta got to him for five runs in his last start, a five-inning affair in which he issued six free passes. The start before that, against San Francisco, Hamels allowed three home runs. Pitching against Washington has been a successful endeavor for him this season, and could be just what he needs to get back on track. He lasted eight innings in both starts against Washington this season, winning each game, striking out 16 and allowing only nine hits.

Pitching for the Nationals is Ross Detwiler, making his first start of the season against Philly. Detwiler gave up four runs in a loss to Milwaukee in his last start.

Jimmy Rollins has three home runs in the series so far, including a pair of solo shots on Wednesday night that powered his team to a win. He has 6 hits in 15 at-bats against Detwiler, including three triples.

The game starts at 7:05 p.m. at Nationals Park. It will be broadcast on the MLB Network as well as CSN Philly.

Phillies Vs. Nationals: Jimmy Rollins Power Surge Fuels 3-2 Win

Jimmy Rollins once again proved to be too much for the Washington Nationals. One night after getting an inside the park home run, the Philadelphia Phillies shortstop swatted a pair of long balls on Wednesday night, posting two runs in the Phillies' 3-2 win over their division rivals.

Rollins homered in the third and fifth innings. Nate Schierholtz also went yard in the fifth, right after Rollins, to stake the Phillies to a one-run lead.

Washington opened with a pair of runs in the first inning. Neither run was credited to stater Vance Worley, who worked seven innings for his sixth win of the year. He allowed six hits and one, but did not strike out a single batter.

Edwin Jackson surrendered all three home runs. He picked up the loss as his recorded slipped below .500 to 6-7. Jackson gave up three runs to the Phillies in his last start against them, a May 23 loss.

Philly has one more against Washington on Thursday night.
