The Philadelphia Phillies concluded a three-game set against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon, falling to their division rivals by a final score of 9-2.
Roy Halladay started the game for the Phillies and was pegged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched. However, the game drastically got out of hand in the one inning Halladay did not pitch, when the combination of B.J. Rosenberg, Raul Valdes and Michael Schwimer allowed six earned runs on five hits in the eighth inning alone.
Ty Wigginton was responsible for producing the Phillies' two runs as he hit a home run in the fifth and tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth.
Former Phillie Greg Dobbs acted as the Marlins' offensive star of the game by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth. Miami starting pitcher Mark Buerhle earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, in seven innings pitched.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been dealing lately.
In the first two games of their current series with the Miami Marlins, both Cole Hamels and Kyle Kendrick have been able to shutout the fish, with the bullpen pitching a couple scoreless innings as well on Tuesday.
Now it's Roy Halladay's turn to get the job done. The 35-year-old has had a very average season thus far with a 6-6 mark and a 3.80 ERA. However, he's been nearly unhittable lately. In his last two starts, Halladay has given up just five hits in 15 innings while allowing just a single run.
For Miami, Mark Buehrle will toe the rubber in an effort to stop the bleeding. In his first year with the Marlins, the southpaw is 9-11 with the same ERA as Halladay, 3.80. Unlike Halladay, Buehrle has been knocked around recently. In both of his last two appearances, Buehrle has pitched six innings and surrendered four runs.
If the Phillies can win and the New York Mets lose, Philadelphia would be in a tie for third place in the NL East.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick went seven scoreless innings and shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ leadoff homer proved the only run the Phillies needed as they topped the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, 1-0.
After Rollins hit his leadoff homer, the 41st of his career, the Phillies’ staff was able to shut down the Marlins for a second straight night. Cole Hamels pitched his second-straight shutout Monday night as the Phillies won 4-0.
The Marlins have now not scored in 27 consecutive innings, having scored their last run in the eighth inning of a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
Marlins starter Josh Johnson pitched a strong eight innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven, but turned out to be the hard-luck loser on the night as the Marlins could not get a run across against Kendrick and the Phillies bullpen.
The teams square off one final time tomorrow at 12:40 p.m. EST as the Marlins Mark Buehrle faces off against Phillies ace Roy Halladay.

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco will begin his rehab assignment with Single-A Clearwater on Wednesday. The Phillies would like to activate Polanco next Monday if he has no setbacks in minor league games in the interim. Polanco was placed on the disabled list on July 23 (retroactively) due to lower back inflammation.
Polanco is scheduled to play five or six innings at third base on Wednesday. On Friday, he will be the team's designated hitter and try to play nearly a complete game at third base on Saturday. When Polanco is activated from the disabled list returns to the Phillies lineup, he is expected to split time with Kevin Frandsen.
On the season, Polanco is hitting .255/.300/.328 with two home runs, 15 doubles, 17 walks and 19 RBI in 82 games.

It's tough to follow up on a complete-game shutout by a teammate, but that's what Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick will try to do Tuesday when he opposes Miami Marlins' ace Josh Johnson at Marlins Park (7:10 p.m. ET on Comcast SportsNet).
Kendrick (4-9) will be trying to help the Phillies (53-62) cement a series victory a night after ace Cole Hamels shutout the Marlins (52-64), who collected just seven hits and struck out five times against the lefty. Kendrick is also trying to bounce back from a tough outing -- 3 1/2 innings pitched, six runs allowed on seven hits -- against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Johnson (7-8) is 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA in his last four starts.

After a dramatic series win over the Cardinals, the Phillies went on the road on Monday night and opened up their series against the Marlins with a 4-0 win. Cole Hamels was dominant for the Phils, going the distance to earn the shutout win. In his nine innings of work, he allowed just seven hits and struck out five. Miami put a man on third in the bottom of the first inning, but Hamels would completely settle in after that minor hiccup and control the Marlins' hitters.
Philly would get to Miami starter Nate Eovaldi the second time through the order, scoring runs in the third and fourth innings. The lineup strung together three hits and was the beneficiary of a Miami error in the third to put a two-spot up on the board. After back-to-back singles by Jimmy Rollins and Juan Pierre, Chase Utley would rip a double to right to plate Rollins and break the scoreless tie. Pierre would score from third on an error after John Mayberry, Jr. sent one to Greg Dobbs at the hot corner.
One inning later, the Rollins-Pierre duo would strike again. Pierre caught an Eovaldi offering and drove it to deep right for a triple, scoring Rollins from first to make it 3-0. That was more than enough for Hamels, who was completely settling into a groove at that point.
Kyle Kendrick will take the mound in the second game on Tuesday and try to build off the work of Hamels.
