With the #5 overall pick in the MLS Superdraft, the Philadelphia Union have selected Maryland goalkeeper Zac MacMath. The 19 year old played his college soccer at Maryland and is considered by many to be the top young American goalkeeper. He is one of only 10 Generation Adidas players in this draft, so he will not count against the Union's salary cap. That's very valuable for a player that probably won't see a ton of action early in his career. Goalkeepers generally take some to develop and MacMath is a good bet to sit for at least his first year.↵
There was even some talk that Everton of the English Premier League was interested in MacMath, so the Union have clearly grabbed themselves a coveted young prospect. MacMath admitted that he did pass on some "overseas opportunities" to sign with MLS. He has been the starting keeper for the United States Men's Under-20 team and figures to progress to the Under-23 team as well.
So the Union take a guy who was arguably the best keeper in college & has international experience at the youth level. While he won't have an instant impact, his future is as bright as any player in this draft.↵
