Union Defeat Crew 1-0 For First Win Of The Year

The Philadelphia Union earned their first victory of the 2012 season thanks to a first half PK from Gabriel Gomez. The one goal was all that it took as the Union downed the Columbus 1-0 at PPL Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Union offense still has yet to break out, but it is an encouraging sign for fans and head coach Peter Nowak to see two straight clean sheets form the defense. It’s even more impressive given that first choice center back and captain Danny Califf was scratched just before first kick with a hamstring injury.

The Union goal would come as a result of the aggressive play of Freddy Adu. In the 37th minute he played a cross into the box that Crew defender Eric Gehrig played with his arm, resulting in a penalty. Gabriel Gomez stepped to the spot and chipped second choice Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum for the 1-0 lead.

The Union would get the majority of the chances for the rest of the game, but in more typical fashion, failed to convert. The win ends a four game winless streak to start the season. The U will look to build on this performance next week as the Union face Chivas USA.
