Temple won the battle of the Owls, downing those of Rice on Monday night by a score of 77-70.
Senior guard Juan Fernandez, who eclipsed the career 1,000-point mark in the first half, led the way for Temple with 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting, adding three assists and five rebounds. Fellow senior guard Ramone Moore added 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting and six assists.
Rice had the lead for less than a couple of minutes in the second half, but Temple then went on an 18-5 run and never looked back -- Rice wouldn't get closer than six points the rest of the way.
Lucas Kuipers was the leading scorer for Rice with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Temple outrebounded Rice 33-30 and assisted on more than half of their baskets (15 of 28).
The last time these two teams played each other was in 1948. The Temple Owls won that game as well, 70-59.

In the battle of the Owls, the Temple Owls are up on the Rice Owls in Texas at the half, 36-32.
Temple led 34-21 with just over four minutes left in the first half, but Rice went on a 11-2 run to close within four at the break. Freshman forward Jarelle Reischer paced Rice's comeback with six points and three rebounds off the bench.
Senior guard Juan Fernandez leads Temple with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting through 20 minutes. His third point put him over the 1,000 point mark for his career with the Owls. Sophomore guard Aaron Browns added 10 points off the bench.
Rice is being led by junior guard Tamir Jackson with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Temple and Rice are even in rebounds, both with 14. Temple has hit 4-of-12 three-pointers and have nine assists on their 15 baskets. They turned it over six times and put the other Owls on the line eight times.
