Linebacker Tyler Matakevich and wide reciever James Whitfield were early enrollees who will count toward the 2011 class and not the 2012 signing class. Quarterback Kevin Newsome is a transfer student from Penn State who played very sparingly for the Nittany Lions in 2009 and 2010.

The Temple Owls picked up another wide receiver commitment as James Whitfield committed (via News-Press.com) yesterday.
Whitfield (6-1, 180) received an offer from Tennessee when he was in high school in Fort Myers, Florida. He also had offers from Kent State and South Florida. A knee injury slowed him down and he decided to go the prep route at Hargrave Military Academy. Whitfield is a two-sport athlete who also excelled on the basketball court. It was at Hargrave where Whitfield was noticed by Temple head coach Steve Addazio.
Whitfield is not Addazio's first military academy commitment this offseason. Temple also landed running back Montrell Dobbs from the Milford Academy earlier this month.
Temple has 30 commitments in the Class of 2012. National Signing Day for college football is on Feb. 1.

The Temple Owls have landed a big (literally) commitment in the form of 6-5, 207 pound WR Romond Deloatch from Hampton, Virginia.
After experiencing a rash of decommits in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and Bill O'Brien taking over as head coach, the Penn State Nittany Lions appear to have finally scored a coup of their own. Defensive back Jordan Lucas of Worcester Academy in New Rochelle, NY, switched his pledge from the Temple Owls to the Nittany Lions on Monday, giving Penn State 15 commitments so far for the high school class of 2012.
The 6-1, 195-pound Lucas reportedly received and accepted the new scholarship offer on the same day. It's not too surprising, considering he lists Temple, Old Dominion, Massachusetts and Akron as his only other offers. Penn State obviously offers a much bigger stage, even if embroiled in turmoil.
The decommitment still leaves Temple with four defensive back in its current class, not to mention several athletes that may be able to play in the secondary. Lucas was arguably the highest profile of them all, however.

The Temple Owls picked up a former Connecticut Huskies commitment today in three-star running back Montrell Dobbs (via ESPN Insider) from Ansonia, Conn./Milford Academy.
Dobbs committed to UConn originally but had to go elsewhere because of an academic issue. Dobbs was considering Marshall until he met with Temple head coach Steve Addazio and assistant coach Sean McGowan. Addazio, who is also a Connecticut native, made Dobbs an offer and he accepted.
Dobbs said
"I really didn't have to think about it much. I wanted to stay closer to home anyway. It was a good fit for me."
During his senior year at Ansonia, Dobbs (5-9, 185) rushed for 3,445 yards and 45 touchdowns. He was the offensive MVP for the Milford Academy last season.
Dobbs hopes he will be able to play next year for Temple but may only be a partial qualifier. No matter what happens with his eligibility for football, Dobbs said he will be enrolling at Temple.

Former Connecticut All-State linebacker Tyler Matakevich will continue his football playing days for the Temple Owls. The announcement came last Thursday, as former St. Joseph player said he would enroll at Temple for the second semester.
The 8-4 Temple Owls will take on the 8-4 Wyoming Cowboys tomorrow in the New Mexico Bowl. The Owls enter the day as seven point favorites.
One of the nation's biggest recruiting classes just got a little bigger. The Temple Owls picked up three more commitments this weekend, according to various reports.
According to Scout.com, Temple signed two-star athlete Khalif Herbin (Montclair, NJ), who also was being recruited by Akron, Buffalo and Delaware.
The Owls added a pair of recruits from Maryland, Rivals.com reports. Wide receiver / defensive back Nate Hairston (Frederick, Md., Governor Thomas Johnson) and outside linebacker Avery Williams (Baltimore, Md., Archbishop Curley) reportedly signed to play at Temple next season.
Temple finished the regular season 8-4, good enough to earn a berth in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl against Wyoming on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Owls enter their bowl game streaking after consecutive wins against Miamo of Ohio, Akron and Kent State, relying heavily on the running tandem of Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown.

Three-star offensive tackle recruit Jackson Matteo (Ashburn, Virg./Broad Run) has made a verbal commitment to attend Temple, according to a Rivals.com report.
He also weighed offers from Ball State, Kent State, Marshall, Massachusetts, Ohio and Old Dominion. Virginia and Virginia Tech showed interest.
ESPN Insider describes Matteo as "an aggressive run blocker who does a good job finishing blocks with the nasty attitude we like to see when evaluating offensive linemen."
Based on his size, athleticism and ability to play either tackle position, Matteo has the potential to grow into a big-time player, but he is not necessarily ready to step into a large role yet. A red shirt year is considered a possibility for Matteo, whose technique in certain situations could use refinement. But he is known as a tough-nosed player, and his frame suggests he could comfortably put on more weight with time.
