2012 NFL Draft: Temple's Bernard Pierce Drafted By Baltimore Ravens In Third Round

With the 84th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens have selected Bernard Pierce, a running back from Temple who was expected to be drafted in the second round but ended up coming off the board late in the third.

The 6’1", 218 lb Pierce had a breakout 2011, rushing for 1481 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Owls this season. Pierce has the lateral agility and quickness to move against the grain. Has excellent vision and has the foot quickness to excel as a zone read back. Pierce has no problem with contact and consistently moved piles forward after first contact.

Pierce has had some durability issues and will need to add some size to keep him from staying on the injury list. Will also need to improve his pass catching ability, grabbing only 19 balls in his three years at Temple.

The Ravens' next pick is the 98th overall. The Ravens have addressed needs at safety, wide receiver, and on the defensive line, but they still have needs on the offensive line and with linebackers.

2012 NFL Draft: Temple's Steve Addazio Thinks Bernard Pierce Should Have Stayed Another Season

Temple Owls head football coach Steve Addazio talked about star running back Bernard Pierce on Friday during Temple's Pro Day workouts. Addazio's team is moving to the Big East next season and he would love to have some of the players who are leaving to try to make it in the NFL.

While Addazio thinks that Pierce should have stayed another season and developed his game, the Temple coach supports the decision of his running back because of the effort he gave to the Owls. Pierce is projected to be a mid-round NFL Draft pick.

For his Temple career, Pierce rushed for 3,570 yards and 53 touchdowns despite battling injuries every season. Pierce leaves Temple as the school record holder in rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and points scored. He also set single-season records last season while he rushed for 1,481 yards and 27 touchdowns.

2012 NFL Draft: Bernard Pierce, Rod Streater Put Up Blazing 40 Times At Temple Pro Day

Temple football players who are preparing for the 2012 NFL Draft are undergoing Pro Day workouts on Friday.

Bernard Pierce was able to improve on his 40-yard dash time from the NFL Combine. Wide receiver Rod Streater also turned in a fast 40 time today.

Running back Bernard Pierce, who surprised many with a 4.45 40 clocking at the combine, lowered his time by one-tenth today. Several watches had Pierce, not known as a fast ball-carrier, turning in times of 4.34 seconds. Sure-handed receiver Rod Streater also cracked the 4.4-second barrier, timing 4.37 in the 40. (via SI)

Blocking tight end Matt Balasavage reportedly ran a 4.78 40 while offensive guard Derek Dennis ran a 5.23.

Pierce, who rushed for 1,481 yards and 27 touchdowns last season for the Owls, could go in the 3rd or 4th round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Dennis could be a late round pick.
