2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament Semifinals, UMass Vs. St. Bonaventure: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The No. 8 seed UMass Minutemen will face the No. 4 seed St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the semifinals of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament on Saturday.

The Minutemen arrived in the semifinal by way of a shocking, 77-71, upset of the No. 1 seed Temple Owls in the quarterfinals on Friday after outlasting Duquesne in the opening round on Tuesday. The Bonnies had a first round bye and then defeated St. Joseph's, 71-68, on Friday.

UMass won the meeting during the regular season, 76-67, on Feb. 8 in Massachusetts. Jesse Morgan scored 24 points in that contest to lead the way. Andrew Nicholson scored 24 points in the losing effort.

Nicholson was the A-10 Player of the Year and leads the Bonnies in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 per game). Chaz Williams leads UMass in scoring with 16.4 points per game, 6.4 assists per game and 2.2 steals per game. So far in the A-10 Tournament, Williams has averaged 20.5 points, 7 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Nicholson had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds in the Bonnies' win over St. Joe's in the quarterfinals.

One thing that aided UMass in the regular season matchup was that the Bonnies were cold from behind the arc, hitting just 2-16 attempts. In their A-10 quarterfinal matchup, St. Bonaventure was just 1-8 on three-pointers and were 7-23 from behind the arc in their last regular season game. If the Bonnies can return to normal from deep range and still have Nicholson working hard inside the paint, it will be hard for UMass to continue their run.

The winner will move on to the final of the tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the conference's automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament on the line.

2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: Fran Dunphy Reacts To Upset Loss

The Temple Owls are still headed to the NCAA Tournament, but their upset loss at the hands of the UMass Minuteman today certainly won’t leave them with their best tastes in their mouths. That said, coach Fran Dunphy hopes to use this game as a teaching opportunity and doesn’t think it will be tough to get them up for the tournament.

"I don’t think it will be a challenge at all, to be honest with you, I would have said to you‑‑ I was impressed and surprised in some ways that we had done such a good job today after getting our doors blown off in the first 6 minutes and finding a way to get that lead. I think it would be similar, use that as a example of we get down and don’t stay down, use that as an opportunity to play better basketball. "

Related: Fran Dunphy talks A-10 Tournament on SBNation Youtube Channel

Dunphy says that the team will have to focus on playing its brand of basketball. They didn’t do that today.

"Got out of character again and that’s what happens‑‑ when it happens we get out of character we’re going to pay the price can and we did today. "

Saint Joe's trailed 33-30 at halftime, but took their first lead at the 17:35 mark of the second half on a Langston Galloway three-pointer. The Bonnies built a small lead near the midway point of the half but the Hawks were able to go back in front with 9:25 to play and then the teams traded the lead down the stretch. Ultimately, the Bonnies made enough free throws to hold off the Hawks.

St. Bonaventure dominated the glass and shot better than 50% from the field for the game. However, behind the arc, the Hawks were 9-22 while the Bonnies were just 1-8. Saint Joe's also turned the Bonnies over 11 times while only turning the ball over three times themselves. The Hawks converted those turnovers into 17 points. 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: La Salle Vs. St. Louis Game Time, TV Schedule And More

After taking care of a tough Richmond team 70-62 on Tuesday night, seventh-seeded La Salle will now face a much stiffer test in the second seed Billikens of St. Louis.

The Explorers (21-11, 9-7) have no choice but to win the A-10 Tourney if they want a bid into March Madness. The good news is that they're hot at the right time. La Salle has won its last three games and looked good in doing so.

The bad news is those victories all came against teams of lesser quality than Rick Majerus' Billikens.

St. Louis (24-6, 12-4) will have enjoyed a six-day rest by the time tip-off occurs Friday evening. Majerus has seen his club play excellent lately, winning eight of nine coming into the tournament.

In their only previous meeting on Feb. 11 with the Explorers, the Billikens took care of business on the road, winning 59-51. Sophomore forward Dwayne Evans took the game over, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds on the way to victory.

St. Louis is probably in the dance regardless of the outcome on Friday. La Salle doesn't have that luxury.

2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: Temple Vs. UMass Game Time, TV Schedule And More

After receiving a bye as the top seed, Temple will face UMass on Friday afternoon for the right to advance into the Atlantic 10 Tournament Semifinals.

The Owls (24-6, 13-3) enter the tournament looking to improve their seeding for March Madness. Temple is No. 24 in the polls, so unlike many teams in the conference it can rest easy about grabbing a bid. With that said, the Owls would love the highest seed possible with some serious momentum behind them.

As for the Minutemen (21-10, 9-7), they need to make a run. With 21 wins, it wouldn't be impossible to earn an at-large bid if they do well but fall short in the A-10 Tournament. However, a loss to Temple would doom any dreams of dancing in the NCAA Tournament.

In the only previous match-up between the two teams this year, the Owls were able to outlast UMass with a 90-88 overtime win at home on Feb. 29th.

Khalif Wyatt and Chaz Williams were dueling stars that game. Wyatt scored 26 points while recording six assists and four rebounds. Williams matched him with 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists of his own.

2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: St. Joe's Vs. St. Bonaventure Game Time, TV Schedule And More

After beating Charlotte 80-64 on Tuesday, fifth-seeded St. Joe's has moved on to play the fourth seed Bonnies of St. Bonaventure in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The Hawks (20-12, 9-7) enter Friday's showdown with some work to do if they're to take part in March Madness. A win over the Bonnies likely wouldn't put them on the bubble just yet, but it would at least put St. Joe's in better position. A defeat would take away any hope of a bid.

St. Bonaventure (17-11, 10-6) is in a similar position. The Bonnies will also need to make an A-10 championship run if they're going to be a factor in the NCAA Tournament.

This will be the second time these two foes see each other in ten days. The previous game was a double overtime thriller which saw St. Bonaventure finally pull out an 89-84 victory.

It will unquestionably be a high-drama scene on Friday afternoon for these two teams; both desperate to keep their dreams alive.

2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: St. Joe's Vs. Charlotte Preview

In the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament, No. 5 seeded St. Joe's is set to square off against No. 12 Charlotte on Tuesday night. The winner will move on to the quarterfinals.

If the Hawks win, they will advance to play against St. Bonaventure while is the 49ers are victorious, they'll meet with Temple.

St. Joe's (19-12, 9-7) comes into this game as a heavy favorite to move on. The Hawks have won four of their last six, although they did suffer a double-OT loss against the Bonnies over the weekend.

Carl Jones will need to continue his excellent play to help his team keep their dream alive. Jones has scored 38 points over the past two games including 18 against a win over Temple. Ronald Roberts Jr. has also stepped up big lately, scoring 18 points in each of the past two games.

Charlotte (13-16, 5-11) is buoyed with the knowledge it already beat St. Joe's in their only meeting this year, 57-52. However, the 49ers have lost their last three and five of six, barely making the tournament at all. The difference in the orignial meeting was free throws. Charlotte had 22 attempts while the Hawks only had seven.

With all of that said, St. Joe's is playing for everything while the 49ers are playing out the string. The Hawks might need to run the table in order to make the NCAA Tournament, but it isn't out of the question to make it with a very strong showing in the A-10 tourney.

2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament: La Salle Vs. Richmond Preview

On Tuesday, there will be a desperate battle between No. 7 La Salle and No. 10 Richmond in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tourney, with the winner moving on the quarterfinals.

The Explorers (20-11, 9-7) are coming in with a two game winning streak after beating George Washington and St. Bonaventure. Previous to those two games, La Salle had lost five of six and was reeling. It will be interesting to see which team shows up tomorrow night.

Earl Pettis will have to continue his exceptional play if the Explorers are going to make a cinderella run in the tournament. Pettis is not only the leading scorer but also the most consistent, always able to be counted on. Conversely, Ramon Galloway has to step up. He's scored just 16 points over the past two games.

The Spiders (16-15, 7-9) have also been playing well lately, winning three of their lost four with only a loss to Xavier. They come into the game with some confidence having beaten La Salle in a nail-biter back in February 78-76.

In that game, Derrick Williams had a wonderful effort with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Amazingly, the rebounding margin was 45-24 in favor of Richmond.

If the Explorers want to move on, they'll have to clean the glass with much better efficiency.

Temple Vs. Fordham Final Score: Owls Win 80-60

The Temple Owls clinched the Atlantic 10 regular season title on Saturday, with a 20 point victory over the Fordham Rams.

The Owls rolled over Fordham behind identical-scoring halves, where Temple scored 40 and the Rams scored 30. Temple guard, Juan Fernandez, was the game's leading scorer with 19 points. Michael Eric, Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson, Ramone Moore and Khalif Wyatt all scored in double figures as well.

Temple has now won 13 of their last 14 games, came into the game ranked 25th in the country and is projected to be a four seed in the NCAA Tournament. They will play out the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament as the one seed, but should be a relatively high seed in the Big Dance, regardless. St. Joe's, Richmond and Dayton are the only three Atlantic 10 teams to defeat Temple this season – something to keep an eye on in the Conference Tournament.
