Potentially devastating news today as ESPN is reporting that the Phillies will place both Chase Utley and Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list. It's bad news for the Phillies who currently sit in third place in the NL East, 3 1/2 games back of the Braves.
Utley injured his right thumb last night on a dive into second base in the fourth inning. He was scheduled to have an MRI today and apparently the news wasn't great.
Polanco has been ailing with bone spurs in his elbow after being hit by a pitch against the Braves back in April. He missed six games back in late May/early June with the same injury.
In a sad irony, MLB announced today that both Utley and Polanco were leading the All-Star voting at their respective positions. That makes three Phillies' every day starters, along with Carlos Ruiz, currently on the DL.
The Good Phight speculates that "some combination of Wilson Valdez, Juan Castro and Greg Dobbs" will be called upon to plug the gap in their absence.
