Behind a team-best 20 points from sophomore forward C.J. Aiken Wednesday, the Saint Joseph's men's basketball program helped their head coach Phil Martelli reach the school mark for most wins (309-2112), as they downed Coppin State, 81-72, at the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena in Philadelphia.
Sophomore guard Langston Galloway added 18 points, while junior guard Carl Jones netted 16 for the Hawks (9-3), who earned their fourth straight victory.
Senior forward Akeem Ellis and senior guard Tony Gallo each paced the Eagles (4-7) with 21 points. Ellis' 3-pointer with 7:29 to go in the first half helped Coppin State earn a 23-22 advantage, but Saint Joe's Aiken responded with three consecutive dunks which helped the Hawks earn a 37-28 halftime lead.
Sophomore forward Halil Kanacevic put together a stat-stuff performance of seven points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four blocked shots for the Hawks, who have two more non-league games before its begins Atlantic 10 Conference play, Jan. 4, against Duquesne.
