The Mets as an franchise are in an unfortunate position. On one hand they're basically a perennial disappointment. But that alone isn't unique, because a lot of teams can say that about themselves... but only the Mets are a perennial disappointment in the largest media market in the country. So not only are there always national eyes on them, but so many people that grew up in the New York area work in the media. So when someone writing for a TV show wants to make a joke about a sports team... it's inevitably the Mets that are the butt of it.
↵One such example was this episode of Family Guy.
↵
"Opening day, here's the first pitch... and the season's over." Funny right? Well not if you are the Mets own network, SNY, and one of your employees played that clip over your announcers following your team's opening day loss. The bosses at SNY were said to be "seething" over the incident and were going to "deal with it internally." In other words, the guy who played the clip will probably have plenty of time to watch Family Guy in the near future.
↵While I normally like to make fun of teams and fans for taking themselves too seriously, I can't say as though I blame the Mets for being upset here. This is their own network and they need to at least try to be positive. This is a team without a lot of talent on the field, crushing debts and declining attendance. They really can't afford their own network to be making a joke out of them. They'll be doing enough of them themselves on the field and in the courtroom.
↵If I ran the Mets, I wouldn't think this was funny. Luckily, I don't run the Mets and I do think it's funny.
