Former WWF wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage was killed in a car accident in Florida today after he reportedly had a heart attack behind the wheel of his Jeep, lost control and collided with a tree. His wife, Lynn, was in the car with him but survived with minor injuries. His real name, by the way, was Randy Poffo and he was 58 years old.
↵As I'm sure is the case with 75% of men my age, I grew up watching wrestling and these guys were my childhood sports heroes. Yeah, I watched baseball and football... but as a kid I was never invested in them like I was with pro wrestling. So I gotta say, it really bums me out when I hear about one of these guys dying before their time. Seriously, when was the last time you heard about a wrestler dying of old age? It's always something tragic...
↵Macho Man was at the forefront when wrestling really hit the mainstream. Back when the WWE was the WWF and guys like Macho Man, Rick Flair, Hulk Hogan and the like were the sports biggest stars... that's when many of us discovered wrestling. While most of us probably lost touch when we got a little older and started following "real" sports more closely, but there's not a guy out there that doesn't get nostalgic when he sees something about one of these old wrestlers.
↵Very sad news for the kid in me. RIP Macho Man.
