Today In Philly Sports History: Sixers Sweep The Lakers For The NBA Title

On May 31st, 1983 the Philadelphia 76ers swept the Los Angeles Lakers to win their first NBA title since 1967. It was the first title for Julius Erving, but Moses Malone was the guy who really sparked them during that run.

Moses was named the finals MVP after he scores 24 points and pulled down 23 rebounds in the series clincher. The Sixers lost just one game in the playoffs that year, nearly fulfilling Malone’s prediction that they would go “Fo Fo Fo” and sweep their way through the postseason.

They beat a Lakers team with Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar, cementing themselves as the greatest team in Sixers history. They certainly sparked an entire generation of basketball fans in Philadelphia.
