Analyzing The Philadelphia Eagles First Depth Chart

The Eagles have released their first depth chart of training camp and it gives us at least a rough idea of where players are at this point. However, it should be noted that the initial depth chart is always weighted toward veterans and guys that have been here. This one is no different. Here's a few highlights starting with the defense.

Cornerback: Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel are your starters with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie backing up Asante and Joselio Hanson behind Nnamdi.

Safety: Here's an interesting wrinkle, Nate Allen is playing strong safety while Kurt Coleman is listed as the free safety. Jaiquwan Jarrett backs up Coleman while Jarrad Page is behind Allen. Don't put a lot of stock into "free" and "strong" safety here though. So far in camp we've seen that Juan has them as pretty interchangeable.

Linebacker: Casey Matthews is your starter at MIKE with Jamar Chaney at WILL and Moise Fokou at SAM. Greg Lloyd, Keenan Clayton & Akeem Jordan are the second team. This is a young unit.

Defensive End: Trent Cole and Juqua Parker are your starters with Jason Babin and Darryl Tapp as the backups. Who starts at defensive end and who plays the most snaps could very well be two different things. Don't be surprised if Babin takes over at LDE before the end of camp.

Defensive Tackle: Your starters the same as the end of last year, Mike Patterson and Antonio Dixon. Obviously, Mike Patterson's medical situation bears keeping in mind here and could change things, but for now he remains penciled in as the starter. Cullen Jenkins and Trevor Laws are your backups. If Patterson can play this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see this as the opening day depth chart at DT and it's likely that we'll see all four guys rotating.

Onto the offense. There really aren't as many jobs up for grabs and therefore not a whole lot of surprises on the offensive side.

Quarterback: It's Michael Vick, Vince Young and Mike Kafka as you'd expect.

Running Back/Fullback - LeSean McCoy with Ronnie Brown as the backup. Owen Schmitt is head of rookie Stanley Havili at FB.

Wide Receiver - Same as last year with DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin as the starters and Jason Avant as the #3.

Tight End - Brent Celek is your starter and so far second year man Clay Harbor remains ahead of free agent signing Donald Lee. As a blocking TE, Lee's role will be based on the package more than anything.

Offensive line - Here's the one spot where there could be lots of changes. Jason Peters and Todd Herremans are the starters on the left side. Jamaal Jackson is #1 on the depth chart at center ahead of rookie Jason Kelce, who has been getting a fair number of snaps with the starters. Mike McGlynn, who started at center almost all of last year, has been moved to right guard where he's backing up rookie starter Danny Watkins. Newly signed Ryan Harris is the current starter at right tackle, although since Winston Justice is on PUP, he is not on the depth chart.
