Flyers Name Chris Pronger Team Captain

The Flyers announced on Friday that defenseman Chris Pronger was named the team’s 18th captain in franchise history. This was largely expected as soon as Mike Richards was traded to Los Angeles, but Pronger is officially the captain. He has previously been captain of the St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks.

Forward Danny Briere and defenseman Kimmo Timmonen were named as alternate captains. The question now that Pronger has the C is whether he'll be ready to start the season. Neither Paul Holmgren or Peter Laviolette would say firmly either way, but Holmgren did sound optimistic.

"I asked him the other day how far behind he is in terms of what he would have done on a normal year. He said, ‘I probably would have skated a couple weeks ago,'" Holmgren said, according to CSNPhilly.com. "So I think he’s right on track for all he’s been through, and I’m excited about him being ready at the start of the season, and I think he is too."
