St. Joe's junior forward Halil Kanacevic was suspended two games and a week of practice for his actions in the Hawks loss to the Villanova Wildcats on Tuesday. Kanacevic flipped off the Villanova student section with both hands after drilling a three-pointer to put the Hawks up, 50-47. Villanova rallied after Kanacevic's gesture and went on to win, 65-61.
The school handed down the punishment to Kanacevic themselves and coach Phil Martelli said, "there is no place for obscene gestures ... this behavior was unacceptable and inexcusable."
In a statement through the school, Kanacevic said "my actions were wrong and embarrassing and I strongly regret them." He will miss games against Fairfield on Dec. 22 and Iona on Dec. 28 and be eligible to return against another Philadelphia opponent, Drexel, on Dec. 31. Kanacevic is averaging 8.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game for the Hawks this season.
