The first round of the 2012 French Open on Sunday didn't go by without an upset. No. 26 seed Andy Roddick lost to Nicolas Mahut.
Roddick lost in four sets: 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
After the match Roddick said:
"I wasn't playing really well," he said. "I moved just horrendously out here. My first step is just so bad on this stuff. I feel like I'm always shuffling or hopping or not stopping or something. So my footwork on this stuff now is just really bad." (via French Open)
The Roddick result was the only surprise. No. 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got off to a slow start but defeated qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
On the Women's side of the draw, Venus Williams survived a rough outing against Paula Ormaechea, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Allentown, PA resident Varvara Lepchenko will play her first round match on May 28 against Ksenia Pervak.
