French Open 2012, Round 1: Varvara Lepchenko Defeats Ksenia Pervak

Allentown, Penn. resident Varvara Lepchenko defeated Ksenia Pervak in Round 1 of the 2012 French Open. Lepchenko defeated Pervak on Court 14, 6-2 6-7(6) 6-4.

With the win, Lepchenko was one of the 10 American women who won in Round 1, keeping the Americans perfect so far. Lepchenko has now advanced to the second round of the French Open in three straight years. She has never advanced past the second round. There are two American women who will play their first round match on Tuesday: Serena Williams and Jamie Hampton. Americans have not sent 12 women to the second round of the French Open since 13 women made it in 1991.

Lepchenko's second round opponent will be Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic defeated Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in Round 1.
