Serena Williams had never lost in the first round of a major tennis tournament. Until Tuesday.
Williams fell to Virginie Razzano of France, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in the first round of the 2012 French Open on Tuesday.
The fifth-seeded Williams took a commanding 5-1 lead in the second-set tiebreaker to bring herself within two points of advancing into the second round, but Razzano rattled off the next six points to claim the tiebreaker and force the deciding third set.
Williams entered the day with a 46-0 record in the first round of major tournaments. But her quest for a 14th major title will have to wait for another tournament.
Williams' previous worst finish in a major came at the 1998 Australian Open, when she lost to sister Venus in the second round.
