On Day 3 of the 2012 French Open, the matches started uneventfully enough. Both No. 2 seeds, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova cruised in straight set wins.
Nadal beat Simon Bolelli 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 and Sharapova took out Alexandra Cadantu, 6-0, 6-0.
The Men's No. 4 seed Andy Murray defeated Tatsuma Ito, 6-1, 7-5, 6-0. The Women's No. 4 seed Petra Kvitova defeated Ashleigh Barty, 6-1, 6-2.
Serena Williams did not have the same relatively day that other favorites had. Instead, Williams lost her first ever first-round match in a major tournament to the 111th-ranked player in the world, Virginie Razzano. Razzano won the match 6-4, 6-7 (13), 3-6.
The U.S. Women are now 10-2 at the French Open after starting 10-0. In addition to Williams' loss, Jamie Hampton retired due to injury on Tuesday.
