Wimbledon 2012 Scores And Results: Varvara Lepchenko Advances In Straight Sets, Favorites Have Big Day Tuesday

The first round of the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon concluded Tuesday. Allentown, PA, resident Varvara Lepchenko had a solid outing, winning in straight sets over Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria, 6-2, 6-3.

Lepchenko committed just nine unforced errors in the win, and recorded 30 winners to 11 for her opponent while winning 64 of 110 total points. She was never broken during the match, while taking four games off Mayr-Achleitner's serve. The No. 58-seeded American will face a much tougher test in the second round when she takes on No. 31 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

In other scores, No. 2 Rafael Nadal survived a 3-0 deficit in the first set to go on to a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-3 win over Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. No. 6 Serena Williams also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, over the Czech Republic's Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
