Women's tennis will have a new No. 1 player.
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was upset Monday by Sabine Lisicki at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, 6-4, 6-3. With Victoria Azarenka advancing on Monday in straight sets against Ana Ivanovic, Sharapova is assured of losing her hold on the No. 1 spot when the next rankings come out.
Sharapova's loss was the third time Lisicki has ousted the year's French Open champion at Wimbledon. She also ousted Li Na last year in the second round and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the 2009 quarterfinals.
In other results from Monday, Serena Williams needed three sets against wild card Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, but advanced 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. Roger Federer also advanced, topping Xavier Malisse of Belgium in four sets.
