2012 U.S. Open Scores: Varvara Lepchenko Advances, Kim Clijsters Retires

Wednesday's action from the 2012 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. was highlighted by a farewell to four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters.

The Belgian retired from singles play following a loss to 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). The loss also snapped her 22-match winning streak at the U.S. Open. She won the event in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

Clijsters will officially retire from the sport after competing in doubles matches at this year's Open.

Allentown resident Varvara Lepchenko also advanced to the third round Wednesday afternoon, defeating Australia's Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Lepchenko had four aces in her victory, while Rodionova had none.

Olympic gold medalist No. 4 Andy Murray advanced to the third round of the tournament for the seventh consecutive year, defeating Croatia's Ivan Dodig 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
