The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night, dropping the series opener by a final score of 4-2. Kyle Kendrick made the rare start for Philadelphia after scheduled starter Joe Blanton was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw four innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out two.
The bullpen had a substantial task but were up to the challenge: Jeremy Horst, B.J. Rosenberg and Antonio Bastardo combined for four scoreless innings. Their effort would go to waste, however, as Philadelphia's offense came up short. The Phils left seven on base and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Only a solo home run from Chase Utley and a sacrifice fly from Nate Shierholtz went on the board for Philadelphia. Josh Lindblom gave up a solo home run to Jason Kubel in the ninth, but with the offense unable to produce the damage was minimal.
The Phillies drop to 47-59 with the loss. They'll look to bounce back in Game 2 of the three game series, scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
