P.K. Subban Trade Rumor: Philadelphia Flyers Discussed Trade For Montreal Canadiens Defender

The Philadelphia Flyers had engaged in discussions with the Montreal Canadiens about the availability of star defensemen P.K. Subban, according to a report by RDS.

The French language report states that the talks likely began shortly after the Nashville Predators matched Philadelphia's 14-year, $110 million offersheet to restricted free agent Shea Weber in July. Subban is also a restricted free agent but has yet to sign a new deal with Montreal, which has led to speculation that negotiations are going poorly and that the 23-year-old may be available via trade.

Philadelphia has attempted to add to its blue line this offseason but failed to retain Weber and his former partner Ryan Suter who ultimately signed with the Minnesota Wild. While the Flyers rolled the dice with an offersheet to Weber due to Nashville's presumed inability to match, finances are not an issue for Montreal and would have no problem matching any sheet, which means trade is the only avenue for Subban to end up in Philadelphia.

However, any trade for Subban would require a substantial roster piece going the other way and according to the RDS report, rookie standout Sean Couturier was a name brought into the discussions by Montreal. It is largely assumed that the Flyers have no intentions of moving the 19-year-old centerman.

[Update 09/12/12 2:15 PM EDT ] Sam Carchidi says there's nothing to the rumors.
