The Villanova Wildcats came into this weekend ranked #3 in the FCS standings. They had a very winnable road game against a 3-win Rhode Island team. Both of the top two FCS teams had lost… Georgia Southern beat #1 Appalachian St. in overtime, while #2 Jacksonville St. fell to Eastern Kentucky. Unfortunately, Villanova couldn’t take advantage on a weekend where they could have possibly jumped to #1.
Rhode Island did not even score an offensive touchdown in their 17-14 upset of the #3 ranked Wildcats. The Delco Times has the gory details.
Jarrod Williams returned an interception for a touchdown, Willie McGinnis blocked a punt and the Rhode Island defense held Villanova to 68 yards rushing en route to a 17-14 victory over the Wildcats.
The blocked punt came in the 4th quarter and more or less sealed Nova’s fate.
It wasn’t all bad news for the locals however as #4 Delaware destroyed Towson 48-0. With one loss, Delaware could very well find themselves atop the FCS rankings come Monday.
